The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.
Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.
Supported by 21 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.
Scanning X-ray techniques are among the most widely used at ESRF, notably for spectroscopy applications, providing rich spatial and elemental information on a large variety of samples (cultural heritage, batteries, metallurgy, semi-conductors, etc..). The ESRF ‘Extremely Brilliant Source’ upgrade has led to an increase in the throughput for those experiments, and thus for the need of more tailored algorithms for efficient and automated data processing algorithms.
You will work to improve data processing tools and algorithms for scanning X-ray applications (primarily for spectroscopy), and put them in production in close collaboration with ESRF beamlines, with the objective of maximising online data analysis during experiments.
You will also explore new avenues in analysis using novel algorithms e.g. using machine learning approaches for enhanced data analysis and acquisition, experiment automation, etc.
The work will take place in the Algorithms & scientific Data Analysis group, in close collaboration with the ESRF beamlines. Further information about the post can be obtained from Vincent Favre-Nicolin ([email protected] ) and Marius Retegan ([email protected] ).
Your missions include:
- the development, implementation, and optimisation of existing and novel algorithms as well as data processing software, primarily for scanning X-ray applications (e.g. scanning fluorescence). This includes the well-known PyMCA software.
- working with other engineers, scientists and ESRF beamlines for the deployment and operation of data processing pipelines.
- You hold a Higher university degree (Master or equivalent diploma offering 300 ECTS) in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Science or similar area. PhD would be an asset.
- Three years of relevant professional experience in the field of X-ray data processing.
- Extensive programming skills in Python are mandatory
- Knowledge of graphical user interfaces development using python (notably PyQt) is an asset
- A strong background in natural sciences or mathematics is an asset
- Curiosity and good communication skills are required, so that you may interact with scientists different techniques and beamlines
- Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)
Permanent contract.
The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
