Offer Description

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVES

The applicant will teach histology and veterinary pathology at Oniris, an academic institution dedicated to higher education and research, in the fields of small animal and large animal medicine.

The teaching team “HAPPC” Histology, Veterinary Pathology, Clinical Pathology, is currently composed of 3 full-time senior lecturers in histology and veterinary pathology (ECVP diplomates), 1 full-time senior lecturer in clinical pathology (ECVCP diplomate), 1 veterinary pathologist, and 3 residents. Apart from clinical pathology, teaching histology and veterinary pathology (including necropsy) represents 1020 hours a year. The diagnostic activity at “LabOniris” corresponds to 2 full-time positions, which are currently only partially filled.

The objectives of recruiting an assistant professor are to support veterinary pathology teaching, not only for veterinary students (from the 2nd to 6th year of veterinary curriculum), but also for ECVP residents, and to maintain excellence of our residency program.

Research activities, in compliance with the applicant’s skills, will be developed either in the IECM (USC1383 Oniris/INRAE) team, or in the PAnTher (UMR703 Oniris/INRAE) team.

MISSIONS

- EDUCATION :

Face-to-face education activities:

  • Veterinary histology for 2nd -year veterinary students (VET2), practical sessions only.

Veterinary histology corresponds to 158 hours per year, to be distributed among 4 lecturers.

  • General pathology and general oncology for 3rd -yearveterinary students (VET3), practical sessions only.

This corresponds to 145 hours per year, to be distributed among 6 lecturers.

  • Special veterinary pathology and oncology for 4th -yearveterinary students (VET4), lectures and practical sessions.

Veterinary pathology and special oncology corresponds to 72 hours per year, to be distributed among 4 lecturers.

  • Necropsy for 5th -yearveterinary students (VET5), clinical work.

Necropsy corresponds to 266 hours per year, to be distributed among 4 lecturers.

Apart from VET5 student education, activities in necropsy include clinical missions, such as necropsy report writing, performing samples for further analyses, writing histopathology reports following necropsies, writing case reports or series for publication.

  • French specialization and European residency in Veterinary Pathology:
    • the applicant will conceive and animate histopathology sessions and gross pathology sessions, including mock examinations in the ECVP style;
    • as well as seminars in veterinary pathology, for ECVP residents from the 4 French veterinary public faculties, in collaboration with other members of the teaching staff.

Also, the applicant will participate when needed in teaching veterinary pathology to residents in clinical pathology, surgery, small and large animal reproduction, dermatology, wildlife medicine.

The applicant will also take part in multi-disciplinary education sessions that require skills in veterinary pathology, such as integrated physiopathology (for VET2 students) and clinical toxicology (VET5); conceive an optional training education course in veterinary pathology for VET6 students; supervise experimental veterinary theses related to veterinary pathology / oncology; and develop interactive on-line education resources for VET2–VET5 students in histology, general and special pathology and oncology, and necropsy.

- RESEARCH :

IECM: Cellular and Molecular Immuno-Endocrinology, USC1383 Oniris/INRAE (head: Julie Hervé)

The IECM Unit studies the effects of stress mediators on metabolism (B-cell maturation) and immunity (type 1 diabetes (T1D) in humans, and robustness of the immune response in pigs), as well as the immunomodulatory role of extracellular vesicles. In a stimulating environment, within a multi-disciplinary Unit bringing together biologists, engineers, pharmacists and veterinarians, the recruited Assistant Professor will develop a research activity focused on the modulation of neutrophil functions in the course of stress responses. Using murine models of T1D, he/she will study the consequences of this modulation in T1D pathogenesis, since recent research findings suggest a major role for neutrophils in the initiation of the disease. This project, which is fully in line with the priorities and strategies of Oniris and INRAE, will reinforce IECM's activities in understanding diabetes and developing innovative therapies. To carry out his/her project, the candidate will benefit from the Unit's networks (national and international) and research and innovation dynamics, as well as from funding already obtained (INRAE, PIA, ANR, partnerships with foreign universities, etc.), and he/she will be supported in the search for additional funding (European Association for the Study of Diabetes, etc.).

PAnTher: Animal pathophysiology and Biotherapy for muscle and nervous system diseases, INRAE/Oniris 703 Joint Research Unit (head: Pr Marie-Anne Colle)

UMR PAnTher develops an integrated strategy that spans from gene to animal, with a focus on using animal models of disease in its experimental methodology. The scientific objectives are founded on two complementary axes:

1) A pathophysiological axis dedicated to understanding the pathogenic mechanisms of genetic disorders affecting the muscle and/or nervous system, including glycogenosis type 2.

2) A biotherapy approach focused on identifying new therapeutic strategies for these diseases.

The successful candidate will study the pathogenesis of glycogenosis type 2. The candidate will focus on stem cell-muscle fiber cross-talk and the impact of the tissue microenvironment on these interactions. Working with a European consortium co-sponsored by UMR PAnTher and internationally renowned disease specialist Prof. Pascal Laforêt, the candidate will focus on the dysregulation of autophagy and carbohydrate metabolism, crucial factors in this pathogenesis. The research project, both cognitive and applied, will be carried out in close cooperation with the lab's veterinary pathologists. The candidate will benefit from developments in comparative pathology and bio-imaging at APEX, the national infrastructure developed by our lab.

- EXPERTISE IN VETERINARY DIAGNOSTIC PATHOLOGY :

Within the histopathology section of “LabOniris” (Oniris laboratory), for a maximum of 20% working time, the applicant will be involved in diagnostic pathology, for Oniris clinicians (small animal medicine, large animal medicine, surgery, small and large animal reproduction, emergency, intensive care, equine medicine and surgery, wildlife animal care center), as well as private veterinary clinics. He/she will participate in research programs that necessitate veterinary pathology skills (cost estimation, histopathological analyses, report writing, publication).

CANDIDATE PROFILE:

Doctor in Veterinary Medicine, and either board-certified in veterinary pathology (ACVP/ECVP diplomate), or PhD. Due to high involvement of the teaching team in French and European specialization in veterinary pathology, the candidate is expected to pass the ACVP or ECVP certifying examination in a short delay if he/she is not board-certified yet.

Previous experience in veterinary education, in scientific research related to veterinary pathology, and in diagnostic histopathology, would be greatly appreciated.

The candidate has precise knowledge in small animal, equine, ruminant, poultry, fish, and exotic/wildlife animal pathology.

Patience with veterinary students, availability, reactivity, rigor, versatility, ability to synthesize, and listening skills, would be greatly appreciated.

Proficiency in French (written, read, spoken) is required. Good skills in English written, read, spoken) are also necessary.
