We are now inviting applications for the position of Project Researcher. The position is for a fixed term with a starting date in August-September 2024 as agreed and ending in August 2026. The position is located in the School of Management in the subject of Regional Studies. The location of the position is Vaasa, however partial remote working is possible. 

Your Role

You will be working as a Project Researcher in an academy project “Being(s) There(s): Geographies of Knowledge Creation Processes in Extended Spaces and Times“(2022-2026).

In this project, we conduct international pioneering research with the leading scholars of the topic. We analyse the new geographies of knowledge creation that are developed due to new technologies, and answer: how knowledge is created, shared, and mobilized through telepresence robots, holograms, virtual avatars, and virtual realities. Research applies mainly qualitative methods, such as interviews, observation and diaries, as well as surveys. Project researcher’s tasks include an international visit of 1-2 months in a leading research group in the topic, and participation in international conferences. Your tasks as a Project Researcher are:

  • Research work and publishing research as part of a research team
  • Some tasks related to teaching and supervision of theses
  • Some administrative tasks

The position is research-oriented. The research profile and activities of the position is located in the School of Management and is connected to the Public Policy and Governance  research group. The research group brings together researchers from regional studies, public management, public law, and social and health care administration, to examine questions related to the nature and change of public activity. The person selected for the position will also have an opportunity to collaborate with the University’s multidisciplinary research platforms InnoLab  and Digital Economy . Work may include other tasks to be agreed upon separately. As a member of the research group, you also participate in the acquisition of supplementary research funding.

The annual working time is 1612 hours based on the general collective agreement for universities. More detailed task description is agreed in the Annual Work Plan.

Requirements

As a Project Researcher you are required to have a master's degree in a relevant field, and the skills and abilities required for the position. A doctoral student who has completed a master's degree and is finishing doctoral dissertation, for example, can be selected for the position of Project Researcher. A researcher who has already completed doctoral dissertation can also be selected for the position, in which case the title will be Postdoctoral Researcher.

Excellent analytical skills, academic writing skills, and communication skills are highly advantageous for your candidature. A proven track record to conduct successfully empirical research (for example, interviews, ethnography) and research collaboration in the topic of the research project is considered an advantage. We also consider work experience in similar tasks of research projects, experience in high-quality journal publications, conferences, and overall experience of working in research projects as an advantage. The following experience are considered an advantage: Knowledge of qualitative methods (especially interviews, survey, observation), competence in innovation-, knowledge creation-, and/or creativity-related research; competence of social scientific research of technologies and/or posthuman methodology, and competence in research fields of human geography and/or regional studies.

From the selected person, we expect the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. You are ready to share your knowledge with your colleagues and develop yourself as a researcher.

Fluent written and spoken English language skills are mandatory in the position. Finnish language skills are also seen beneficial in the position. Read more about the selection process and language guidelines .

The salary is based on both the job requirement and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System (YPJ). The salary for a Project Researcher is based on demand levels 2-4 (approximately 2225-2775 euros/month) and level 5 (approximately 3213 euros/month) for a Postdoctoral Researcher. An additional personal salary component is paid based on work performance.
