Offer Description

Our multidisciplinary research team focuses on smart electricity grids, sector coupling (power-to-x) and sustainability aspects within the LUT University School of Energy Systems ’ laboratories of renewable energy generation and storage , electricity markets and power systems,  and sustainability science

In a newly launched project, we will study the production and storage of renewable electricity in a smart electricity grid, the production of renewable fuels (H2, biogas, etc.) and the electrification of the logistic operations at a nearby port area. The test area comprises production of on-shore wind and rooftop solar power, and our partners plan to install battery energy storage systems (BESS) and start the production of hydrogen by water electrolysis and biogas from waste water. Moreover, the electrification of both internal (cranes and forklifts) and external logistics (electric trucks) and supply of shore-to-ship power are anticipated. The power needs in the port area are expected to increase significantly.

Are you interested in becoming part of our success story? Would you like to be a researcher in key technologies and solutions for tackling the climate crisis? If you have the motivation and ambition to conduct international high-level research and aim to become a doctor and a highly valued expert in your field, you might be just the person we are looking for.

Your research would focus on the emission reduction potential of port operations by electrification and/or by use of renewable fuels produced locally. Moreover, the research should address the additional infrastructure needs related to power and fuel distribution and storage and the cost of alternative emission reduction measures. A holistic approach comprising technology, economics, emission reduction calculations, and business models will be required.

You must have a university master’s degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g., electrical engineering, energy technology, physics, or similar) and the ability and motivation to complete the doctoral studies within their normative duration (i.e., three years). To achieve the project objectives, you will need basic knowledge about electrical engineering, renewable fuels, and energy system modelling.

Employment relationship and pay

The employment contract can be concluded only if the candidate obtains the right to pursue doctoral studies at LUT University. The employment starts with a one-year term and can be extended by two years provided that the studies have progressed satisfactorily.

The salary is based on the current collective agreement for Finnish universities. The typical gross starting salary for a junior researcher is approximately 30,500 euros a year. In addition to a competitive salary, the wide range of benefits that come with the job include a holiday bonus, generous annual leave, a research incentive scheme with personal rewards for high-quality publications, flexible working hours, occupational health care, a collegial working environment, and continued commitment to your support, learning, training, and development.

The work starts as soon as possible or as agreed.  Your employment will begin with a six-month trial period.
