Doctoral Researcher

for a 4-year position in Fibre and Particle Engineering Research Unit. 

Fibre and Particle Engineering Research Unit carries out research in the field of advanced inorganic materials in circular economy. The multicultural research group consists of 50 people; 3 professors, 15 doctors and 24 doctoral researchers. We have an open and encouraging working atmosphere and have a substantial track record in attracting competitive funding including Horizon 2020 EU and the Academy of Finland programmes.


Work description

This position is a part of European Doctoral Training Network project CONTRABASS (DC Project 2 – “carbonation of magnesium silicates and synergy with calcium silicates”). Cement is one of the biggest polluters and responsible for 8% of all anthropogenic CO2 emissions. At the same time, cement offers an optimal carbon capture and storage (CCU) opportunity due to massive volumes and favourable chemistry.

Your research will concentrate on developing advanced cement-like materials, focusing on chemical reactions, microstructure and material properties. Your task will be to carry out multidisciplinary research with state-of-the art methods, including laboratory work, inorganic material analyses, as well as computer modelling. 

You will carry out research work within a research team and publish research results in leading international scientific journals.

What we expect

  • We are looking for a team player with solid research skills.
  • You must have a Master's degree in engineering, materials science, chemistry, physical chemistry or in a closely related field. Please note that your degree should be obtained within the last 5 years, latest by the start of the employment.
  • We expect you to have knowledge in laboratory and material analysis technique(s) (X-ray and vibrational spectroscopy and microscopy)
  • Experience with cement chemistry and computational modelling is advantage.
  • You should have good communication skills in both written and spoken English.
  • The applicant should comply with the mobility rules: the candidate must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting organisation for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date.

Scientific publications, thesis supervision, activity in the scientific community and practical familiarity with the field in question will be used as selection criteria.

Salary

The position is fixed-term for 4 years, starting 1.4.2024 or as agreed.

The salary will be based on the levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 2300-2600 € per month (before taxes).  

A six-month trial period will be applied to the position.
