The newly established Enzyme Engineering Group of Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain) is seeking an experienced staff scientist within the field of X-ray crystallography and computational structural biology. In the Enzyme Engineering Group we are focused on developing enzymes for sustainable production of industrial chemicals used as dyes, fragrances, aromas and pharmaceuticals. As our staff scientist, you will build and maintain our structural biology infrastructure and independently carry out structural and functional characterization of enzyme leads.

The job
Our staff scientist will be key to establishing and maintaining a smoothly functioning structural biology lab to support a small group of ambitious and hard-working scientists who are using X-ray crystallography and in silico modelling integrally but not exclusively to other techniques.

Primary areas of responsibility: 

  • Purchase, implementation and maintenance of specialized X-ray crystallography laboratory equipment.
  • Purchase, implementation and maintenance of computational infrastructure for structural biology software and data storage.
  • Synchrotron data collection, remotely and by travelling to European and potentially American synchrotrons on a regular basis.
  • Independent experimental work within structural biology and other areas of protein chemistry, including enzyme kinetics.
  • Training of less experienced colleagues.

Our expectations of you
A PhD/MSc degree in Structural biology, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology or a related field is mandatory. 

Preference will be given to candidates with the following qualifications and skills: 

  • Solid X-ray crystallography experience
  • Availability to travel to synchrotrons on a regular basis
  • Experience in managing computational infrastructure for structural biology
  • Linux proficiency
  • Excellent planning and organization skills
  • Excellent practical skills, e.g. for ad hoc instrument fixes
  • Good communication skills
  • Fluency in spoken English

Further qualifications: 

  • Interest in commercialization/translational research
  • Experience with recombinant protein expression and purification
  • Experience with standard molecular biology techniques, including site-directed mutagenesis and cloning
  • Experience with organizing work for others, e.g. students
  • Experience with enzyme engineering, especially enzyme stabilization
  • Experience with transcription factors or CAZymes, in particular glycosyltransferases
  • Experience with high-throughput assays

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The position is fixed-term until 31 December 2020.

The work place is at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability, building 220 at DTU main campus in Lyngby, Denmark.
