Research Assistant in Systems Biology and Bioinformatics - DTU Biosustain
Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark
Job Description
At The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain), located on the Technical University of Denmark’s main campus near Copenhagen (Kongens Lyngby), we develop the next generation of biosustainable technologies using synthetic biology techniques with state-of-the-art equipment and top-class scientists from all over the world. We aim to achieve the goal of a sustainable future by creating novel paths to chemicals, materials, pharmaceuticals, and food using microbial cells. We are searching for a software engineer who will contribute to the development of bioinformatics databases and analytics platforms to be leveraged in designing strains for sustainable bio-based production of valuable compounds.
Build microbial strain design tools for large-scale omics analysis and more
You will join the DTU Biosustain’s Reconstruction Team, headed by DTU Biosustain Prof. Bernhard Palsson and Patrick Phaneuf. Together with your colleagues, your overall goal is to research and build computational resources in the domain of pangenomics and metabolic modeling to serve with engineering microbial cell factories. These microbial cell factories are being developed for various applications, including small molecule production, bioactive compound production, and microbial foods through experimental and computational design approaches.
Your primary tasks will include:
- Generating large-scale pangenomes and mining them for genes and pathways of interest,
- Developing metabolic models to predict strain phenotype,
- Analyzing multi-omic datasets (e.g. genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics),
- Contribute to the development of computational methods, tools, and workflows,
- Work within cross-functional teams to define strategy and data sources for microbial strain design and optimization,
- Summarize and present results and recommendations to international collaborators and stakeholders.
At the DTU Biosustain, cross-organizational collaboration and knowledge sharing are the foundation for turning our highly ambitious goals into reality. As such, you can look forward to working closely together with experimentalists, computationalists, and engineers to ensure the success of your projects.
As a formal qualification, you must have a master’s degree in engineering or equivalent.
We are looking for an independent and driven individual who prioritizes quality, clarity, impact, innovation, and constructive collaboration. We also expect this individual to have the professional and organizational skills necessary to manage, contribute to, and communicate progress for multiple parallel projects. Additionally, your CV should demonstrate:
- A master’s in bioinformatics, computational biology, bioengineering, or equivalent,
- Computational analysis background (Python, R, etc),
- Excellent written and spoken English, interpersonal, and organizational skills,
- Experience with a range of multi-omics data types and associated bioinformatic algorithms/statistics.
- Familiarity with methods for computational modeling of metabolism (constraint-based, kinetic modeling, etc),
- Experience or motivation for applying statistical and machine learning methods to strain design challenges,
