Job Description
If you want to boost your career as researcher and educator within one or more areas of radioanalytical chemistry, environmental radioactivity monitoring, radioecology and radiotracer studies of environmental processes, here is the chance! We offer an opportunity to join the faculty at one of the world’s leading university departments in environmental engineering. At DTU Sustain you work at the forefront of science providing solutions to major societal challenges related to climate change, circularity, sustainability, and environmental quality.
DTU Sustain has been very productive and successful during the last decades within radioanalytical chemistry, environmental radioactivity and tracer studies using radionuclides and has established a strong competence in this field. The radioecology and tracer study group is world-wide well-known for its work in environmental monitoring of radioactivity, radiochemical analysis and radiotracer studies.
Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to strengthen DTU Sustain’s competences within the areas of environmental radioactivity monitoring, radioecology and radioanalytical chemistry. Current topics in the group are monitoring of radioactivity in environment and food, ocean water circulation and marine environment studies using natural and anthropogenic radioisotope tracers, radioanalytical methodology, radiological characterization for various waste samples from decommissioning and operation of nuclear facilities, radioecology and radiation risk assessment. Your expertise can contribute to further development of these research topics but potentially also add new relevant topics.
You will interact with academia, students, public authorities, consultants, and industrial partners in Denmark as well as abroad.
Employment implies original research at the highest international level within one or more of the following research themes:
- Radiochemistry
- Techniques for analysis of radionuclides
- Environmental radioactivity monitoring
- Chemical speciation of radionuclides in the environment
- Radioecology
- Tracer applications of radioisotopes
For the position the potential for contributing to the group and for world-class performance within the area, is key in the evaluation process. Candidates are not expected to meet all the wishes nor perform within all the topics listed below.
We expect that you have a strong Danish and/or international platform and strong background or experience within the topics. Your primary tasks will be, in collaboration with the group, to:
- Perform research at an international level in the cross-field of waste, resources, sustainability, and circularity.
- Build up, develop, and contribute with new experimental approaches and methods (waste characterization, laboratory experimentation, data interpretation).
- Contribute to research in the group and with colleagues in related sections (materials, environmental assessment, etc.).
- Enhance the competence of group in the following fields:
- Monitoring of environmental radioactivity including design and management of the programme for monitoring radioactive matter in Danish environment and food, Arctic Management and Assessment Program (AMAP), monitoring and risk assessment of legacy sites.
- Radiochemical analytical methodology involving development of nuclear (radioanalytical chemistry, beta measurements, alpha and gamma spectrometry etc.) and non-nuclear methods (ICPMS, AMS, TIMS etc.) for the determination of radionuclides and their speciation in the environment and various waste samples.
- Terrestrial radioecology including studies of factors decisive for radioactive contamination of the terrestrial ecosystem.
- Marine radioecology including field studies of the transfer of radionuclides in the marine environment.
- Dispersion of radioactivity in the ecosystem, ocean, atmosphere and terrestrial.
- Provide public sector consultancy to inform decision making with regards to environmental radiation safety.
- Teach and supervise BSc and MSc student projects and be supervisor for PhD students covering a broad range of waste related topics.
You are expected to take a lead role in teaching at the BEng, BSc, MSc and PhD levels.
DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.
