Job Description

DTU, The Technical University of Denmark, Centre for Technology Entrepreneurship (DTU Entrepreneurship) invites applicants for a 2-year Post-Doc position on “A data-driven approach to understand the onset of stress and its contagion”, starting on March, 15, 2024 (or as soon as possible thereafter).
The overall goal of the Lundbeck Foundation funded project is to understand the mechanisms of social stress contagion using a data-driven approach.
Stress-related disorders are becoming increasingly prevalent across all age groups, significantly impacting individuals´ lives and society. Addressing the growing prevalence of mental health issues, the project aims at employing a machine learning (ML) approach to detect early signs of stress.

Previous research has shown that observational, physiological, and psycholinguistic data can detect early signs of stress. ML algorithms can identify intricate patterns in such data to accurately make quantitative predictions about symptom severity. Initial evidence suggests that workplace stress can be spread through social interactions, but we have not fully understood yet how this contagion occurs.
The main question of this project is: “How can we detect stress early enough to prevent the onset of long-term illness and mitigate its contagion?”
The project seeks to uncover new insights into the biological, emotional, and cognitive layers of stress responses within workplace settings. It involves employing and integrating data collection methods for accurate stress detection and creating a new ML tool for early prediction of stress and its transmission among co-workers. The ultimate objective is to prevent excessive stress levels in workplaces. Given that fear of stigmatization, data misuse, and a general lack of trust in emergent technology is a major barrier to the translation of mental health innovations into practice, the proposed tool not only harnesses technological capabilities but also incorporates end-user judgment and ethical boundaries to determine the appropriate use of technology.
You will be a member of the Psychology in Entrepreneurship group within the Centre for Technology Entrepreneurship at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). You will work under the supervision of Associate Professor Carina Lomberg.
Responsibilities and qualifications
Within an experimental approach, you will first aim at identifying the contagion effects of stress through social interactions using physiological data. In a next step, you will assess the magnitude of social stress contagion based on duration, frequency and intensity of interpersonal relationships in teams, applying machine learning methods to the collected data. The ultimate goal is to build and test a model for continuous early stress detection that will help develop resilience and prevention strategies for stress contagion.
Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Design and conduct experiments based on physiological data
  • Analyse the collected data using state-of-the-art methods
  • Design, implement and thoroughly test model-based machine learning approaches for assessing the magnitude of stress contagion
  • Collaborate with researchers within an interdisciplinary environment
  • Write academic papers aimed at high-impact journals
  • Participate in international conferences and workshops
  • Disseminate research results

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
