Postdoc in Sustainable Manufacturing and Modelling of Polymer-matrix Composites

Updated: about 1 year ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 30 Apr 2023

Do you want to be involved in the green energy transition? Do you wish to contribute to the development of wind energy and are you looking for a career in R&D or academia? Then we have an opportunity for you.

DTU Wind invites applications with a talent and passion for simulation, manufacturing, and analysis of polymer-matrix composite materials for a 2-year Postdoctoral position.

Responsibilities and qualifications

We are seeking a Postdoctoral candidate who can contribute to our research in the field of manufacturing polymer matrix composites for wind turbine blades. This work is expected to focus the characterization, modelling, and experimental validation of curing kinetics for novel sustainable resin systems and the residual stresses resulting from manufacturing, in support of the team aim to develop a material digital twin for the full material lifecycle (including repair and recycling). This position is linked to the WiseWind project.

The primary responsibilities for this role are:

  • Plan and manage your own research in collaboration with supervisors and project managers.
  • Characterize resin material behavior (using DSC, DMA, DEA, etc.).
  • Manufacture and test composite specimens together with our experienced technicians and development engineers.
  • Develop physics-based models to simulate the phenomena taking place in the infusion manufacturing processes (using Digimat, Abaqus, PAM-Composites, or other relevant software).
  • Develop novel experimental methods to validate your predictive models.
  • Collaborate with industrial partners and share your knowledge.
  • Disseminate your findings at conferences and in relevant journals.

Qualifications

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field e.g. As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD diploma in a relevant field e.g. aerospace, mechanical, chemical, or materials engineering. To master the interdisciplinary research and to communicate with our team of experts, it would be an advantage to have a background and qualifications in several of the following areas:

  • Experience with the chemistry and/or mechanics of polymer-matrix composite materials.
  • Experience with infusion manufacturing and resin characterisation.
  • Experience in simulations of polymer-matrix composite materials (particularly related to manufacturing, viscoelasticity, and curing kinetics).
  • Experience with residual stress analysis of fiber-reinforced composites and structures.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. However, a typical agreement for such a position is approximately equivalent to € 65,000 incl. pension (before tax) per year, with six weeks paid annual vacation.

The period of employment is 2 years, starting at the earliest possible date, and the working location will be DTU Wind, Risø Campus, in Roskilde.
