Job Description

Are you an ambitious researcher who would like to develop your career in sustainable fish feed and ingredient production for aquaculture? Here is your chance.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) at the Technical University of Denmark offers a postdoc position in the development of lower tropic level feed ingredients for fish feed in aquaculture. The main part of the position is related to an externally funded project on “Value chains and Closing the Loop” aiming at assisting SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) in developing green solutions for aquafeed ingredients including mussels and black soldier fly larvae, incorporating value chains and circular economy. You will be in charge of processing and analyzing the nutritional composition of feed ingredients developed, and you may be required to run trials with e.g. black soldier fly larvae at partner location. Furthermore, you will be in charge of testing the nutritional value for fish of new and alternative ingredients.  You may also become involved in other projects related to fish feed, feed ingredients, and digestion. 

The position is hosted by the Section for Aquaculture located at DTU’s satellite campus in Hirtshals, Denmark. 

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in relation to aquaculture, and you must have documented experience in planning and running animal trials, sampling of biological materials, laboratory analysis, and preferably some experience with digestion/nutrient uptake analysis. Furthermore, you must have a driver’s license and be willing to/prepared for some travel (domestic) and periods of work away from home. 

Additionally desired traits and skills: 

  • Relevant background in nutrition and/or nutritional biochemistry
  • Knowledge of animal feed and ingredients
  • Experience with producing feed on (lab. scale) extruder 
  • Experience, accuracy and patience for laboratory work
  • Analytical skills and experience in statistical analysis
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English
  • Ability to work independently and be flexible

Salary and terms of employment 
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 2 years.

The expected starting date is 1 April 2024 (or according to mutual agreement). The vacancy is a full-time position.

DTU Aqua’s Section for Aquaculture conducts research within recirculation technology, water treatment, water quality and nutrient discharge as well as fish feed, nutrition energetics and welfare. The research aims to improve existing and develop new rearing methods and technologies to reduce the environmental impacts of aquaculture and to optimize operations taking due consideration of the needs of the fish.
