Job Description

Are you eager to make an impact in offshore wind research that accelerates the green energy transition?

Are you enthusiastic about the leading renewable energy in the world? If you are interested in increasing the penetration of wind energy in the electricity grid through improved wind farm control and co-design, this postdoc is the opportunity for you.

Wind energy continues to increase its role in the electrical grid, which puts additional requirements on developing future technologies to ensure energy security, storage, price fluctuations, turbine wear and lifetime estimations.

The postdoc is part of the H2020 project, SUDOCO, which targets a 10% reduction of the cost of valued energy by developing the control room of the future for large wind farms. To this end, there is a need to perform high fidelity dynamic CFD simulations of the aerodynamic wake interactions within large wind farms subject to different control strategies. The simulations will be performed using the DTU in-house Large Eddy Simulation (LES) tool and actuator methods to represent the turbines.

Responsibilities and qualifications

  • Perform high-fidelity wind farm simulations using EllipSys with actuator discs/lines coupled to aero-elastic tools
  • Develop and test interface between high-fidelity simulations and generic wind farm controller
  • Analyse performance and aeroelastic response of large wind turbines operating during different atmospheric conditions and control strategies
  • Verification and validation efforts of lower fidelity models against the LES
  • Supervision of BSc, MSc, and potential PhD students
  • Participate in scientific conferences and publish results in scientific journals.

We expect that you have:

  • A background in physics, engineering, geoscience, or similar.
  • A good understanding of fluid mechanics or boundary-layer meteorology.
  • Experience with performing CFD simulations of wind farm flows using aero-elastic coupled actuator discs/lines with different control strategies
  • Experience with analysis of large data sets.
  • Scientific programming experience, e.g. Fortran, and scripting, e.g. Python/Matlab
  • Clear and concise communication skills in English
  • Positive attitude, a strong drive and eager to learn

You also work efficiently in a project team and take responsibility for own research goals

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
