Job Description

DTU Wind is expanding its activities within floating wind energy. We are involved in several international projects and are constantly improving our calculation methods through scientific research, validation and application studies. We have a strong tradition for aero-hydro-elastic modelling and continuously work to support the design, control and load analysis for tomorrows 20+ MW class wind turbines. This involves modelling and control work on response of floating wind turbines and their integration into wind farms, development of aero-hydro-servo-elastic models and scientific analysis of experimental data. The modelling is to a great extent integrated in our HAWC2 aero-hydro-servo-elastic code, which we apply and extend on a daily basis.

The position is in the Response, Aero-elasticity, Control and Hydrodynamics (REC) section, located at our Risø campus and is linked to the recently funded FloatFarm European research project, where a consortium of 15 companies and universities develop key technologies for the wind farm of the future. In close collaboration with scientific and technical colleagues, you will have a direct impact on developing new generation of tools and promoting a renewable energy future.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The position focuses on the following areas

  • Scientific method development and validation of aero-hydro-elastic load models for large floating wind turbines.
  • Development of integrated co-design frameworks for floating wind turbines that combines structural design, aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, and control system design.
  • Aero-hydro-servo-elastic simulations to investigate different mooring and cabling options for a given offshore wind farm layout. The ultimate goal is to assess the material savings and reduced impact on the environment resulting from the optimised design of offshore wind farms, with a focus on shared mooring solutions.
  • Development and support within the HAWC2 code complex, where the methods and findings are implemented.

You will further take part in development of new projects, grant and supervision of MSc students. Within the REC section, you will be working as part of a team of scientists and software development engineers, who will provide introduction and training of skills that you may not have upon hire.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent). We are looking for a candidate with a PhD degree in the broad area of Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil and Offshore Engineering. In addition, we expect you to have experience in some of the following technologies and scientific fields:

  • Wind turbine aero-elasticity
  • Wind turbine control
  • Load and response modelling for offshore structures
  • Floating wind turbine dynamics
  • Programming in Matlab, Python and Fortran

We expect that you share our vision to strive for Wind Energy and its successful application in society and are comfortably able to

  • Work independently and to efficiently deliver results on time
  • Work as part of a team in a collaborative and multi-disciplinary environment
  • Take the initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines
  • Communicate in English, both verbally and written
