Job Description

Would you like to become part of the solution towards green energy transition, by helping develop the tools and methods for Life cycle performance modelling? The Structural Integrity and Load assessment (SIL) section at DTU Wind and Energy Systems is inviting candidates to apply for a Post doc in Life Cycle Cost Modelling and Decision Making (depending on qualifications), considering both onshore, bottom-fixed, and floating offshore wind turbines.

We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility. We develop talent by offering a career mentor, state-of-the-art research infrastructure, and postgraduate teacher training.

Responsibilities and qualifications
You will be part of the SIL team that works on:

  • Risk, Reliability Engineering and RAM (reliability, availability, maintainability) analysis,
  • Probabilistic design, assessment and uncertainty quantification,
  • Data, Digitalisation, AI/ML and decision support systems (i.e., cyber-physical systems),
  • Materials and monitoring,
  • Service life integrity assessment and end of life scenarios,
  • Project valuation and Life Cycle Cost modelling and
  • Wind farm-wide operational strategies.

As a Life Cycle Cost Modeling and Decision Making Specialist, you will assume a leadership role in exciting research activities aimed at enhancing the lifetime, reliability, cost-efficiency and circularity of wind turbine structures and major components.

This role requires the development of advanced numerical models, the integration of monitoring data, the establishment of key performance indicators (KPIs), techno-economic analysis, and the creation of integrated decision support systems that contribute to the development of autonomous cyber-physical systems. This is done in collaboration with the section and the department, in national, EU and industry sponsored projects. Your primary responsibilities will be:

  • Multidisciplinary Decision Support Models: Develop multidisciplinary models and decision support frameworks capable of seamlessly integrating diverse criteria into the formulation of operation and maintenance strategies. This includes the incorporation of reliability-centered maintenance, risk-based inspection, and other state-of-the-art methodologies.
  • Techno-economic analysis: support the goal of sustainable energy that delivers maximum value to the society, through developing tools and methodologies for value assessment, considering multiple KPIs within cost, revenue and sustainability.
  • Digital Twin Development: Contribute to the development of digital twin models through data-driven methods. These models facilitate life prediction and operational optimization of critical turbine structures and components, employing both physics-based and data-driven approaches to enhance performance.
  • Research Excellence: Publish your research findings in prestigious international journals and present your work at renowned international conferences.
  • Grant Application: Contribute to the formulation of grant applications for national and European calls to secure funding for cutting-edge research, opening up future research possibilities for you and the team.
  • Academic Contribution: Actively participate in the academic community by teaching and supervising BSc and MSc students at DTU. You will also have the opportunity to support the supervision of PhD students within the department.

The following qualifications will be beneficial:

Essential qualifications:

  • Educational Background: A background in mechanical, civil, or electrical engineering with a strong emphasis on applied mathematics or systems modelling. Further specialization in the context of life cycle cost modeling and decision making for wind energy systems is an advantage.
  • Scientific Modeling Skills: Proficiency in developing advanced numerical and analytical models tailored to support life cycle cost modeling, including the integration of monitoring data and the creation of decision support systems for wind energy systems.
  • Scientific Programming: Strong programming skills in scientific languages such as Python, MATLAB, or C, with a demonstrated ability to apply these skills to develop machine learning and/or AI models and conduct analyses relevant to wind energy systems.

Desired qualifications:

  • Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Development: Experience in establishing and utilizing KPIs for assessing the performance and integrity of wind turbine components, which enhances decision-making processes and supports the development of autonomous cyber-physical systems.
  • Decision Support System Development: Demonstrated ability to create integrated decision support systems that aid in the formulation of operation and maintenance strategies. This includes expertise in optimizing maintenance approaches, such as reliability-centered maintenance and risk-based inspection.
  • Asset Integrity Management Expertise: Familiarity and/or experience with asset integrity management strategies for structural and mechanical components within the wind energy sector.
  • Research Proposal Development: Proven track record in formulating persuasive research proposals, ideally within life cycle cost modeling and decision making. This includes a demonstrated ability to secure research funding and drive successful grant applications.

You may get the opportunity to contribute to the teaching of courses. You will be expected to learn Danish and be able to teach in Danish after 3 years. DTUcan provide Danish language courses.

As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
