Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Postdoc to join our team and contribute to our efforts in developing integrated optical phased array (OPA) for the applications of LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), free-space optical (FSO) communications and underwater optical communications. The successful candidate will work on an innovation project aimed at developing state-of-the-art LiDAR and FSO systems for real-world applications. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in innovative research, collaborate with industry experts, and drive the development of next-generation LiDAR and FSO solutions.
An OPA is a (periodic) arrangement of optical antennas that all emit light in phase to project a collimated beam. The emission angle and shape of this beam can be tuned by adjusting the relative phases and amplitudes that feed into the individual emitters or antennas. Particularly, OPAs are compatible with cheap and high-volume CMOS manufacturing. Due to the unique features of compact size, fast scanning and low cost, the integrated OPAs are becoming a transformative technology for LiDAR and FSO systems.
As a participant of the project, the Postdoc will become part of a team at DTU with expertise in design, simulation, nanofabrication, characterization, and application of photonic integrated circuits (PIC). The activities within the project will benefit from synergies with other projects in the group as well as with other activities in the department. The main supervisor will be Dr. Hao Hu, DTU Electro.
Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to strengthen the department’s competences of developing integrated athermal optical phased array on silicon nitride (SiN) platform. You will work with nearby colleagues, and with both academic and industrial partners in Denmark as well as abroad. Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Develop integrated athermal SiN platform by incorporating titanium oxide (TiO2 ) with negative thermo-optic coefficient
  • Design and fabricate integrated optical phased array on the athermal silicon nitride platform
  • Characterize the integrated optical phased array for solid-state beam steering
  • Use OPAs for the applications of LiDAR, FSO and underwater optical communication
  • Supervise BSc and MSc student projects, and be co-supervisor for PhD students
  • Data analysis, writing of scientific articles and presentations at conferences and meetings.
  • Participate in outreach activities including, but not limited to, social media updates, participation in public events and campaigns, as well as dissemination to popular press.

The exact research activities will be continuously adapted to ensure high relevance and impact.
The successful candidate is expected to have experience and expertise in one or more of the following subjects:

  • Experienced in cleanroom work and nanofabrication.
  • Experienced in integrated photonics.
  • Self-motivation in research and innovation.
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

Preferred qualifications and experience:

  • Experienced in SiN integration platform.
  • Experienced in silicon photonics
  • Experienced in design and characterization of OPA
  • Experienced in LiDAR or FSO systems

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
