Job Description

If you are motivated by working on the design and development of solid phase extraction of clinical samples on centrifugal microfluidic platforms as part of a European Innovation Council (EIC) Transition Grant project, then this position is for you. The ultimate goal is to evaluate the technology's market potential and prepare a business plan for commercialization. You will have an opportunity to be a part of the start-up team.
At IDUN we are committed to advancing scientific research with real-world applications. This project, funded by the EIC Transition Grant, aims to develop an automated clinical platform for personalized antibiotics therapy in critical care units, leveraging Surface Enhancement Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) techniques.
You will spearhead the development and optimization of solid phase extraction sample preparation protocols on centrifugal microfluidic platforms. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and clinicians to translate research findings into practical solutions and a possible product for healthcare applications.
The project will be conducted within the IDUN research section, under the leadership of Prof. Anja Boisen, at the Department of Health Technology (DTU Health Tech), Technical University of Denmark (DTU). IDUN is a vibrant research section comprised of over 45 members dedicated to advancing micro- and nanotechnology-based sensors, detection systems, and drug-delivery devices. Keys responsibilities

  • Design and fabricate microfluidic devices for automatic solid-phase extraction of target compounds in a complex sample matrix at various stages, including proof-of-concept, prototype design, optimization, and validation.
  • Utilizing microfluidics in various diagnostic applications
  • Staying up to date with recent advancements in fabrication methods, materials, technologies, and microfluidics applications.
  • Collaborate with analytical chemists to test the microfluidic devices optimized for sample preparation. Ensure the integration of necessary components and functionalities for seamless operation.


  • As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree in chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, or other related disciplines.
  • Experience in microfluidics design and microfabrication is a must.
  • Additional experience in sample preparation, HPLC, analytical chemistry, image analysis is preferred.
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, organized, and responsible individual.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on your highest degree with the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
The period of employment is 1 year. Expected starting date is 1 September 2024, or according to agreement with candidate.
