Associate Professorship in the Study of Religion with a Primary Focus on Norse Religion

The School of Culture and Society invites applications for an associate professorship in Norse Religion at the Department of The Study of Religion and Arabic and Islam studies. The associate professorship is a permanent position which begins on the 1. January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Place of employment: Aarhus University, Department of The Study of Religion and Arabic and Islam studies in Denmark.

The position

We are seeking an innovative and dedicated candidate with a strong research profile and research-competences in Norse Religion, who will contribute to the development of the Department of The Study of Religion and Arabic and Islam studies and its core activities in the areas of research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange. The associate professor will be expected to develop collaborative research initiatives with other fields in the Study of Religion in its widest sense as well as other researchers focusing on Norse Religion at the School of Culture and Society and to develop projects with external financing.

Research

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to core activities at the School of Culture and Society and Aarhus University in general and to strengthen the Department of the Study of Religion and Arabic and Islam studies research activities and its output in particular. The applicant will be expected to take an interest in research collaboration within the Department of the Study of Religion and Arabic and Islam studies research program, the School of Culture and Society, the Faculty of Arts, and beyond.

 It is expected that the applicant can cover the following:

  • Thorough knowledge of pre-Christian Scandinavian religions, including relevant philological skills and concomitant theoretical literature as well as comparative perspectives
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the study of religion, including theoretical, methodological and comparative perspectives
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the general history of religion and comparative religion
  • A relevant and internationally oriented research profile
  • Experience with and interest in collaboration and research with other fields within the study of religion and with other disciplines

Experience with and interest in:

  • Active participation in international research collaboration
  • Obtaining external funding
  • Interdisciplinary teaching, including innovative teaching methods
  • Digital/computational humanities
  • Building up a centre for Norse Religion and Viking studies
  • Supervising student projects, and interest in research talent development

In the application, the applicants should explicitly present their vision and plans for the development of Norse Religion in relation to the study of Religion in general at Aarhus University with respect to research and teaching.

Past research achievements will be assessed based on the active research time of the applicant in question. We therefore ask applicants to specify any career breaks they have had (for instance due to maternity/paternity leave) in order to gauge their research productivity.
