    Salary: The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $100,550 - $141,412.     This position is situated at the University of Victoria Libraries, on the traditional territory of the ləkIʷəŋən peoples on whose traditional territory the University of Victoria stands, and the Songhees, Esquimalt, and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

    The University Libraries at the University of Victoria seeks a creative, energetic, technologically knowledgeable Data Science librarian. The DS librarian is a research and learning specialist with a strong science and computing background, who will advise on areas of research support, data management, information sources, digital research tools & platforms, and emerging library programs. They will work closely with colleagues in the Libraries, and support students, faculty, and researchers in the departments and programmes of Physics & Astronomy, Mathematics & Statistics, Earth & Ocean Sciences, and Chemistry. Duties and responsibilities may be adjusted over time in support of the evolving strategic priorities of the University of Victoria Libraries. The DS librarian reports to the Head, Advanced Research Services.

    Summary of Responsibilities
    The Data Science librarian will integrate with research project teams in the Sciences, providing training in advanced research computing applications & digital research tools and best practices for ensuring publications and research data management plans meet funding agency requirements.  The DS librarian will also work proactively with students and faculty in the Sciences to ensure they are supported in acquiring the digital information fluency skills essential to their academic and research success.

    The Data Science Librarian will:

    • Help advance the Libraries’ strategic directions
    • Work closely with UVic Research Computing to understand and promote services available to UVic researchers
    • Develop and deliver workshops on data analytics tools and platforms
    • Provide in-depth research consultations for faculty and students working in Science disciplines
    • Develop and deliver high quality library research instruction sessions, and participate in the Libraries’ teaching and research help model
    • Perform collection assessment and promote library resources in assigned subject areas
    • Maintain and develop subject guides in assigned areas
    • Build collaborative teaching & research partnerships with faculty members in the Sciences
    • Actively participate on library, university, regional, national, and international associations and committees, as appropriate
    • Participate in research data management (RDM) initiatives with other colleagues
    • Work with UVic Libraries colleagues in related disciplines to provide consistent service and to share knowledge and expertise.

    The Data Science Librarian will help students, faculty, and researchers to:

    • Locate and use high-quality resources in the assigned subject areas of: Physics & Astronomy; Chemistry; Mathematics and Statistics; and, potentially, Earth and Ocean Sciences
    • Understand and access a range of library services including publishing support, software workshops, data curation support, document delivery, equipment loans, etc.
    • Understand and access a range of Research Computing services available at the University of Victoria
    • Gain fluency with a variety of advanced research computing tools including data analysis and visualization tools, electronic lab notebooks, Github, and Jupyter Notebooks
    • Understand and comply with Tri-Agency research directives such as Research Data Management (RDM), equity diversity and inclusion (EDI), and Open Access mandates
    • Adopt robust RDM & data curation practices
    • Submit publications, datasets, and code to appropriate open access repositories

    Requirements

    Qualifications

    • Master’s degree from an accredited school of library science, or a Master’s or higher degree in another discipline with expertise and excellence in professional practice relevant to the position if the candidate agrees to complete an MLS from an accredited school of library science before the end of the probationary period
    • Fluency with digital research tools, such as:
      • data analysis and visualisation tools, (e.g. R Studio, Power BI, Tableau)
      • electronic lab notebooks (e.g. Labguru, Benchling, SciNote)
      • Jupyter Notebooks/Jupyter Lab
      • Github/GitLab
      • UNIX command line, Python
    • Demonstrated knowledge of principles and best practices for RDM
    • Familiarity with major Canadian RDM platforms including Dataverse, FRDR, and DMP Assistant
    • An advanced degree in a STEM discipline will be an advantage
    • Experience developing and effectively delivering instructional material for synchronous and asynchronous delivery, both in person and online
    • A commitment to professional ethics, continuous learning, and professional and personal development
    • Ability to work in engaged, proactive, and innovative ways in an embedded library and Faculty environment
    • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively in a rapidly changing environment
    • Superior interpersonal and communication skills

    Scholarly and Professional Activities
    Participates in Libraries and University committees, councils, task forces, and teams as appropriate. Keeps up-to-date with developments in the profession and related fields, and on broader issues that affect the practice of librarianship. Participates in professional organizations as appropriate. Undertakes research and engages in scholarship as appropriate.
