The Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a multidisciplinary research community where investigators across engineering, medicine and dentistry collaborate to develop innovative solutions that address global challenges in human health. Your opportunity:

The Teaching Lab and Design Studio Coordinator will report directly to the Manager of Operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for all teaching laboratory and design studio space, equipment and activities and health and safety inquiries, as well as shared common equipment. The Teaching Lab and Design Studio Coordinator will work with course instructors and teaching assistants to ensure classes run smoothly and efficiently. Additionally, the successful candidate will provide safety training to students and other users of BME laboratory spaces and track their records.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Performing lab experiments that requires great precision and attention to many details.
  • Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on lab techniques, experimental procedures and protocols.
  • Modifying experimental processes and implementing more efficient ways to conduct experiments.
  • Liaising with course instructors to coordinate experiment set-up to compliment theoretical material.
  • Preparing, assembling and setting-up material, equipment and supplies used in teaching and/or research labs.
  • Providing orientation to others on lab equipment, working procedures and practices.
  • Providing safety training and ensuring compliance to lab safety procedures and standards.
  • Ordering supplies within established limits.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum three years of recent and relevant laboratory experience, preferably in a university teaching environment, and experience with one or more of the following: tissue engineering/ bioengineering/cell biology.
  • Demonstrated experience in photolithography fabrication in a cleanroom environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with CAD/CAM design using AutoCAD and Fusion360/SolidWorks, 3D processing software and 3D printers.
  • Experience with using MatLab programming and performing data analysis.
  • Experience and knowledge of health and safety legislation and process, with a track record of delivering either in-person or online health and safety training to others.
  • Experience overseeing the preparation of laboratories to ensure all undergraduate labs are running according to experiment schedule.
  • Experience preparing solutions and chemicals for experiments and experience in database management to maintain files of all chemicals in the laboratory.
  • Experience ordering chemicals and supplies based on knowledge of course material consumptions and requirements and forthcoming undergraduate experiments/workshops.
  • Experience developing processes to increase productivity and to enhance the efficiency of students learning experiences.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to demonstrate lab techniques, experimental procedures and protocols to students, teaching assistants and other employees.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental health and safety programs, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Ability to foster and maintain effective relationships with individuals at all levels, and work effectively in a highly collaborative and consultative environment with faculty, course instructors, sessional lecturers, teaching assistants, and other laboratory technicians.
  • Proven ability to exercise judgement, tact, diplomacy, and a high degree of initiative.


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering.
  • Experience in operation of biomedical monitor equipment for recording of human electrocardiogram (ECG), electromyography (EMG) or electroencephalogram (EEG).
  • Experience in operation of force plate for human physiology.
  • Experience in procurement software (USource) and university procurement process.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 11 -- $73,748 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $94,310. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
