Description:

This RA is funded to support the Spencer-funded Participatory and Collaborative History Projects as Pathways for Knowledge Creation for Teaching and Learning Anti-Racism in Secondary Schools project. This Research Assistant will support the planning, implementation and post-event organizing for a convening focusing on critical approaches to Africana (Black, African, African Diaspora) history education through participatory and collaborative history as a pathway to anti-racist pedagogical approaches and knowledge creation in secondary schools. The convening will bring together, scholars, activists, organizers, artists, teachers, and archivists in a non-traditional learning and sharing format to create collective knowledge towards the creation of the Africana Collaborative History Project. The convening will feature collaborative learning circles, focusing on knowledge sharing and creation. The convening will bring together scholars to work for the creation of digital resources which brings together the various projects in accessible ways for public use.


Qualifications
A Master’s or PhD student with experience in planning and administering events, with a demonstrated interest in and knowledge of Africana/Black studies in education. Ability to travel internationally in July/August 2024.

Responsibilities
- Support with planning of convening including preparing and sending emails and letters of invitation, following up on visa support needs in collaboration with South African partners, planning program content and workshops as well as local events including food, logistics, and entertainment of participants.
- Attend convening and support with convening logistics, record keeping, and report writing.
- Write up a final report and plan for follow-up activities.
- Support with proposals for the expansion of the project beyond the convening.


Qualifications Required (skills and abilities, education, language skills):
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Meticulous planning skills, attention to detail, and critical deadlines
- Creativity and problem-solving skills
- Community-oriented, able to reach out to and engage with diverse audiences.
- Familiarity with international travel and the needs of participants from various countries in the Global South
- Familiarity with Africa and the African diaspora


Education/experience requirements:
- Masters or Ph.D. student or possessing a Master’s or PhD
- Studying education with a focus on Black/African studies or personal study of African/Black studies especially history and cultural studies
- Education leadership/education policy studies are an asset.

Additional qualifying skills and abilities:
- Interest in digital and community archives is an added advantage.
- Conference or community event planning
