Job Summary
This position is primarily responsible for conducting basic lung function tests on respiratory patients.  The job includes performing spirometry, sputum induction, allergy skin testing and oximetry for clinical and research purposes, billing for procedures, maintaining and calibrating equipment and occasionally assisting with other duties directly related to respiratory testing and equipment maintenance.  It is important that work be performed according to protocol in order to ascertain accurate readings of patients’ lung function.  This will impact patient treatment.
Organizational Status
The position is solely responsible for respiratory testing.  Reporting to the Clinic Manager, with additional direction received from the Medical Director.  This position will work alongside clerical staff, researchers, asthma/COPD educators and respirologists.
Work Performed

The responsibilities of this position include:

  • Administering patient questionnaires and determining eligibility

  • Performing Spirometry, allergy skin testing, FENO, sputum induction and oximetry for clinic patients and recording data and/or observations.

  • Assisting in the analysis and interpretation of the test results and preparing reports

  • Preparing and maintaining media and buffers for allergy and sputum induction tests

  • Maintaining clinic supplies and calibrating standard clinic equipment

  • Teaching inhaler technique to patients

  • Booking urgent patients for spirometry lab testing

  • Handing out to physicians interpretation a monthly medical peer review.

  • Maintaining interpretation schedules for walk-in spirometry

  • Assisting in patient billing


Consequence of Error/Judgement
It is important that work be performed according to protocol in order to ascertain accurate readings of patients’ lung function.  This will impact patient treatment. 
Supervision Received
The incumbent must take initiative in most tasks.  There will be supervision for the Clinic Manager as needed.  The Medical Director for the clinic will provide some guidance.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPR Certification is essential

  • Experience in a hospital or clinic setting with direct patient contact is preferred.

  • Familiarity with respiratory diseases and spirometry

  • A second language
