This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

In accordance with the Temporary Librarian, Administrative and Professional Staff (TLAPO) Agreement , this position offers a comprehensive benefits package found on our Benefits Overview page and an annual salary range of $67,731 - $112,811. This position has an initial appointment of 1 year with an expected start date of May or June 2024 to an end date of June 20, 2025.

Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in person work, with the in person portion taking place at the Calgary Campus.

Working for the Department/Faculty 

The Institute for Stuttering Treatment and Research (ISTAR) is a not-for-profit, self-funded institute of the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Alberta. We offer specialized treatment to children, teens and adults who stutter. Through the Communication Improvement Program (CIP), we work with children, teens and adults with a variety of speech, language and communication challenges including speech and language delays, motor speech disorders, and acquired speech and language disorders. In addition, we offer accent reduction and communication improvement workshops and provide in-person and telehealth services to rural and remote schools in Alberta. In addition to our clinical program, we conduct research in the field of stuttering, offer advanced professional training for speech-language pathology students and clinicians, and promote public awareness of stuttering and its treatment. Position 

We are seeking a temporary full-time (1.0 FTE) Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) to cover for a leave in our Calgary location.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide assessment and treatment services to children, teens and adults with stuttering or other communication problems.  The position will primarily serve people who stutter, and focus predominantly on preschool and school age children. A portion of the caseload may be comprised of clients in ISTAR’s Communication Improvement Program (CIP) and consist of children, teens and adults who present with other speech/language problems or concerns. The position will primarily serve clients through virtual care, on-site at ISTAR and may require some off-site travel as part of ISTAR’s outreach program or in the case of special service contracts. Other duties may include facilitating research, training, public education and fund development as assigned by the Clinical Director.

Duties 

Assessment services to clients of ISTAR and CIP

  • Determine assessment modality (in-clinic or distance).
  • Schedule accordingly.
  • Communicate with technicians to arrange virtual care assessments or with school personnel to arrange school assessments as requested.
  • Prepare, including interviews of referring clinician and/or teachers as appropriate.
  • Conducts assessments.
  • Make recommendations.
  • Completes analysis and recording protocol; 
  • Follow-up as needed.

Treatment services to clients of ISTAR and CIP

  • Design appropriate treatment approach and ongoing evaluation system.
  • Provide individually tailored treatment as needed for fluency or other communication disorders in extended, semi-intensive, virtual care or intensive format in the clinic or school, as appropriate.
  • Prepare for and follow up with clients as appropriate including materials preparation home activity preparation, reporting and completing referrals and consultations and filing.
  • In cases where school contracts are assigned, travel to school sites may be required.
  • Participate in coordinating ISTAR intensive and refresher clinics.
  • Provide family training or education as appropriate.

Participate in the education and supervision of students

  • Provide occasional guest lectures on subject matter locally or as invited elsewhere.
  • Participate in supervising students completing practicums at ISTAR.
  • On occasion, offer observation opportunities or consultation to students in speech pathology or related programs.
  • Conduct school presentations to students as needed to support childrens’ therapy
  • On occasion, conduct in-service to teachers or allied professionals.

Participate in special projects

  • Contribute to clinic operation by overseeing selected resources (eg. equipment, waiting room, materials room, reference materials).
  • Periodically review clinical materials, resources and protocol and provide input as requested.
  • As time and skills allow, participate in specific research, clinical or public education projects as requested.

Qualifications

  • Lidcombe training is required.
  • Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
  • Specialized training in therapy for stuttering such as, Parent Child Interaction or Camperdown  including other communication disorders.
  • Registration in provincial professional college and willingness to be registered in BC.
  • Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to identify speech disorders by listening.
  • Prior experience at ISTAR is a huge asset.
