Schedule Description
DUTIES

The simulation technician will work closely with the Nursing Resource and Simulation Center Coordinator and faculty from the BScN and HCA programs, providing advice and support in using patient care simulation equipment and operating the nursing lab.  The simulation technician will manage equipment, including:  multi-media, computer, and other related resources used in patient care simulation exercises.  In addition to this, the technician will be responsible for the setup, routine maintenance, clean up and day to day operations of the Nursing Practice Resource and Simulation Centers at Thompson Rivers University.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Provide technical assistance and oversee lab and simulation equipment, including:  preparation, implementation, software installation and configuration, routine maintenance, programming, performance testing, certification and safety monitoring of full-body patient simulators (software and hardware). 
  • Maintain other equipment and related multimedia peripherals including digital video recording systems.
  • Develop and maintain web materials to support lab and simulation center activities.
  • Provide A/V capture and delivery of simulation sessions and scenarios.
  • Develop inventory control practices and procedures to manage supply and inventory levels cost effectively. 
  • Interact with medical equipment and pharmaceutical vendors to ensure goods and services meet medical training objectives.
  • Obtain bids and make purchasing decisions within delegated authority.
  • Maintain record keeping and ensure that standards are met.
  • Implement hardware and software updates. 
  • Work with department and faculty to establish priorities and ensure timelines are met. 
  • Demonstrate technical aspects of operating simulators to faculty members and others.
  • Provide summaries of operational expenses, equipment usage and equipment repairs.
  • Collect data and prepare summary reports to support research grants, commercial and special projects.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance/Quality Control programs as required by accreditation/approval standards and University protocols/policy. 
  • Perform administrative duties including faxing, photocopying, report processing/filing, distributing results, booking lab and simulation centre time, data entry.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION

     

    • Grade 12 plus an Associate Degree, 2 year diploma, or equivalent post-secondary education  

    EXPERIENCE

     

    • Three (3) years' related laboratory or field experience 
    SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB

     

    • WHMIS Certification
    • Demonstrated knowledge of Computer Programming, hardware and software applications (accounting or scheduling software), MS Office Suite, A/V expertise, Business Systems, or Accounting
    • Ability to work with sophisticated simulation software programs
    • Technical trouble-shooting skills
    • Ability to deal courteously, tactfully and persuasively with students, staff, faculty
    • Demonstrated knowledge of safe laboratory practices
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a team
    • Demonstrated knowledge of budgets

     

    WORKING CONDITIONS

     

    • Sitting at a desk or standing for long periods of time
    • Ability to lift weights in excess of 10kg
    • Travel required

     
    The salary for the above position is determined by the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4879, as it presently exists.
    Pay Band
    $28.36 - $31.51 ( CUPE Grade 07 (90% - 100%) )
    Salary rate
    Please Note: This position may be subject to a 90% salary for the first 560 hours of employment.
