Course number and title: HPS 200H1S Science and Values
Course description: An introduction to issues at the interface of science and society. Including the reciprocal influence of science and social norms, the relation of science and religion, dissemination of scientific knowledge, science and policy. Issues may include: Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Weapons; Genetic Engineering; The Human Genome Project; Climate Change.
Estimated course enrolment: 100 students
Estimated TA support: 200 hours, depending on enrolment
Class schedule: Tuesdays 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Thursdays 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Sessional dates of appointment: July 1 to August 31, 2024
Salary: Salary: Sessional Lecturer I - $9,457.90; Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term - $9,930.79; Sessional Lecturer II - $10,121.77; Sessional Lecturer II - Long Term - $10,326.62; Sessional Lecturer III - $10,362.76; Sessional Lecturer III - Long Term - $10,570.02
Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Minimum qualifications: PhD in the history or philosophy of science and/or technology, experience in teaching or TA-ing undergraduate HPS courses.
Preferred qualifications:
- Expertise in the course subject
- Previous experience in teaching or TA-ing the course will be an asset.
Description of duties: Preparation and delivery of the course materials; preparation and delivery of course assignments; supervision of teaching assistants; submission of grades to the university officials; reasonable student contact hours.
