Course number and title: HPS 120H1F How to Think About Science
Course description: This course addresses the nature of science and its importance to our understanding of ourselves. Questions include: What is a science? Is science objective? What is scientific reasoning? Has our conception of science changed through history? How does science shape our moral image? Does science reveal our natures as humans?
Estimated course enrolment: 150 students
Estimated TA support: 300 hours, depending on enrolment
Class schedule: Tuesdays 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Thursday 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Sessional dates of appointment: May 1 to June 30, 2024
Salary: Salary: Sessional Lecturer I - $9,457.90; Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term - $9,930.79; Sessional Lecturer II - $10,121.77; Sessional Lecturer II - Long Term - $10,326.62; Sessional Lecturer III - $10,362.76; Sessional Lecturer III - Long Term - $10,570.02
Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Minimum qualifications: PhD in the history or philosophy of science and/or technology, experience in teaching or TA-ing undergraduate HPS courses.
Preferred qualifications:
- Expertise in the course subject
- Previous experience in teaching or TA-ing the course will be an asset.
Description of duties: Preparation and delivery of the course materials; preparation and delivery of course assignments; supervision of teaching assistants; submission of grades to the university officials; reasonable student contact hours.
