Job Summary
The primary purpose of the Senior Research Coordinator is to utilize their skills and training in scientific writing, literature reviews, research coordination/facilitation, exposure assessment, and occupational and environmental health as part of a CIHR-funded program on the impact of climate change on the health of workers in Canada. This position also requires working closely with the broader CAREX Canada team to further support the development of new research projects, analysis of data, report and publication writing, and to disseminate, communicate, and mobilize CAREX Canada research outputs. This position requires demonstrated knowledge in occupational health and exposure monitoring, assessment and data analysis, population and public health research methods, the health of equity-deserving populations, and experience in knowledge exchange and mobilization approaches. 

The Senior Research Coordinator will be responsible for supporting, coordinating, and executing research activities as it relates to estimating the prevalence of hazardous exposures and/or scenarios that place workers’ health at risk in the context of extreme weather events. The position will require a mix of quantitative and qualitative skillsets, potentially including survey data, focus groups, key informant interviews, and knowledge translation processes. The work involves using published scientific literature, government/industry exposure measurements, and professional opinions of the team and broad stakeholder community. The Senior Research Coordinator uses their strong data interpretation, research, and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate research to diverse knowledge users. The Senior Research Coordinator will also work closely with the CAREX team to engage with and maintain working relationships with partners, collaborators, and organizations across Canada. 
Organizational Status
As a member of the CAREX Canada team, this position reports to the Principal Investigator (PI), and works closely with other CAREX team members and trainees. 


CAREX Canada (CARcinogen EXposure) is a multi-institution team of researchers and specialists with expertise in epidemiology, exposure assessment, spatial analysis, health policy, and knowledge mobilization. The purpose of CAREX Canada is to provide a body of knowledge about Canadians’ exposures to known and suspected carcinogens, in order to support organizations in prioritizing exposures and in developing targeted exposure reduction policies and programs.


The University of British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (UBC CDC) is a Senate approved Centre within the Faculty of Medicine that is strategically integrated into the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) to conduct and coordinate research, education, knowledge translation and policy development in support of provincial, national and international programs for public health control and prevention. 
Work Performed
The Senior Research Coordinator is responsible for the following major areas:

STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP:

•    Advising and leading the development of research approaches for occupational and environmental health that align with CAREX Canada priorities;
•    Support and contribute to the development of research goals and objectives;
•    Contributing to research and communications best practices;
•    Overseeing the progress of projects.
 

KNOWLEDGE TRANSLATION AND MOBILIZATION: 

•    Maintaining relationships with partners and key internal/external stakeholders with support from the CAREX team in order to align CAREX program of research priorities with those who will use CAREX evidence and research.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT:

•    Works closely with the CAREX Canada team with coordinating the planning, designing, implementation, and evaluation of research studies;
•    Conducting research projects (mainly analytically, but including supporting grant writing as applicable).
 

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES: 

•    Utilize their knowledge in exposure monitoring and occupational and environmental health to support and contribute to the development of research plans and the execution of research activities;
•    Leading the set up and execution of research activities and work;
•    Providing input into processes, protocols and procedures to effectively execute research activities;
•    Selecting journals and peer-reviewers for manuscript submission, preparing manuscripts for publication and communicating with journal authors, reviewers, etc.;
•    Preparing scientific and public reports of findings (e.g. presentation, manuscript writing, final report).
 

DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS:

•    Leading and coordinating data collection, identification and/or preparation;
•    Conducting the analysis and interpretation of research data;
•    Managing research related records and databases.
 

WRITING/REPORTING:

•    Writing and editing reports, scientific publications, and summaries of findings;
•    Supporting project compliance, and ethics and grant applications.
Consequence of Error/Judgement

Errors made will affect the quality and productivity of the research project(s), performance of research staff, and research partnerships.

This position will be responsible for access, collection, use and disclosure of personal information in accordance with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (RSBC 1996) and other UBC privacy and security policies. This position requires employees to work under strict confidentiality requirements; internal procedures and policies to protect personal information must be followed and adherence to these requirements will be regularly reviewed by the employer.
Supervision Received
The applicant is expected to function independently, but will report to the Principal Investigator (PI) of CAREX Canada. Works with independence and autonomy within the scope of the work performed. Work is reviewed periodically by the PI to assess the scope of work performed and the achievement of defined goals and key performance indicators.
Supervision Given
The Senior Research Coordinator will be responsible for supporting research and knowledge translation and mobilization activities conducted by the CAREX team, and may oversee work by external vendors that support CAREX Canada research and communication activities, as well as CAREX team members and trainees.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

•    Post-graduate degree (MSc or MPH) in occupational and environmental health, health sciences, public health, climate change, social sciences, or related field; 
•    Relevant experience based in exposure monitoring and occupational and environmental health preferred or a combination of experience, training, and education will be considered;
•    Relevant knowledge and experience in climate change and the impacts of extreme weather events
•    Demonstrated program development, and understanding of research methodologies;
•    Ability to navigate, interpret, and analyse research information related to occupational and environmental health and/or climate science;
•    Ability to interpret and prepare scientific and public reports;
•    Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication (written and verbal) skills, including the ability to communicate and translate findings effectively with audiences with varying levels of technical expertise;
•    Able to support grant writing;
•    Highly proficient with Microsoft Office applications;
•    Proficient in at least one data analysis platform (e.g. SAS, STATA, R);
•    Experience using Covidence, Qualtrics, and other various web-based applications, WordPress, basic understanding of HTML is an asset; 
•    Ability to work with GIS and generate maps of exposure (with ArcGIS software, for example) is an asset.
