Excellence in construction is core to the foundations of this campus as is the value of an experienced Senior Project Manager to the fabric of the architecture. The Senior Project Manager will be a key player, managing vital construction projects amidst a vibrant and active campus.

 At UTM, we are seeking exceptional Senior Project Managers that are leaders in the construction industry who can align themselves with the vision and values of this institution.  The successful candidate will be capable of enhancing the student experience by facilitating construction from detailed analysis of a problem to big picture thinking that brings enhancement to the portfolio of the Facilities Management and Planning team.

Reporting into the Director, Construction and Project Management Office, the Senior Project Manager will take end to end ownership over a range of projects, from infrastructure refresh to major renovations.  The incumbent will align staff, contractors and resources, to execute all phases of the project, and realize client business needs.  This role will prepare, manage, coordinate and deliver projects, while providing correspondence, review and feedback on drawings, administer contracts, and align all required support to the project.

As a Senior Project Manager, you will contribute to the mission by:

  • Strategic involvement at the planning stage of a project and perform as a resource to the FMP planning team to develop a defined scope of work
  • Leading projects through the construction process by applying industry best practices related to management of risks, schedule, user and contractors
  • Development of a construction budget that reflects total project cost, applying key factors relevant to each project and validate the value of work
  • Applying a mindset of contract administration, advising and approving changes, including Contemplated Change Orders/Change Orders (CCN/COs), and propose possible options and outcomes
  • Coordinating information through liaison between stakeholders, providing awareness to UTM clients (students, staff, and faculty) in a timely and proactive manner
  • Day-to-day monitoring of projects and clear communication between FMP leadership and Users 
  • Recognizing and implementing BPS procurement procedures to engage and hire contractors and trades 

What you will bring to the role:  

  • University degree in engineering or architecture with professional designation.
  • Demonstrated Minimum ten years' related experience in the construction industry, including some related experience in design. 
  • Demonstrated Contract Administration experience and on-site troubleshooting
  • Experience with managing critical path schedules and the demonstrated abilities to course correct
  • Computer-based projects scheduling/management experience (e.g. MS Project) is required. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel. 
  • Effective communicator understanding the roles of the project team
  • Excellent analytical, visual and problem-solving skills to assess inconsistencies on a job site
  • Demonstrated organizational, project management and leadership skills. 
  • Superior oral and written communication skills; superior interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to exercise patience, tact, diplomacy and discretion. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a consultative team environment. 
  • Highly developed creativity and initiative. 
  • Budget management skills. 
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects within strict budget and timeline constraints with strong time management skills. 
  • Proven ability to respond to frequently changing priorities. 
  • Valid Ontario Class 'G' driver's license and access to a vehicle is required. 

Assets (Nonessential):  

  • BIM coordination experience
  • Experience in the capacity of Owner representative 
  • Project schedule and critical path management experience
  • Value Engineering experience
