NOTE: This a temporary position ending on or before July 31, 2024.
The Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (CEES) is looking to hire a passionate individual to begin working full-time starting in February 2024. The position is located on NAIT main campus. The primary responsibilities of this position will be to assist Senior Researchers and Technologists in the implementation of technology development or verification and validation studies of oil sands related technologies, products or solutions.
The Technology Access Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (TACEES) is located in NAIT’s state-of-the art research laboratory in the Productivity and Innovation Centre. TACEES is staffed by an expert team of applied scientists, engineers and technicians. We bridge the gap between existing oil sands environmental research and real-world solutions, taking innovative ideas from concept to commercialization. We work with business and industry to develop technologies that improve the economic and environmental performance of the oil sands industry.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform general laboratory tasks including solution preparation, experimental setup, utilize analytical equipment.
- Conduct routine testing of water samples using standard procedures for pH, conductivity, TSS, Ion Chromatography and assist researchers with nonstandard testing using various techniques.
- Assist in maintaining laboratory in optimal state including general housekeeping, chemical inventory/ handling, and updating safety protocols.
- Carry out detailed protocols related to water treatment technologies. Provide valuable feedback to optimize techniques and assist team with method development and internal validation.
- Communicate results and observations effectively between project teams and industry partners as needed.
- Cooperate in meetings, troubleshooting activities, and process optimization.
- Perform simple data analysis, and summarizing the data obtained using Word, Excel, and Power Point
Skills & Abilities:
- Must have an interest in research and have familiarity with lab instrumentation, membrane technology, experimental design, and the oil sands industry.
- Understanding of lab safety guidelines and best practices including WHIMS, and Occupational Health & Safety guidelines
- Demonstrated experience with membrane technology, water sampling and analysis techniques is preferred.
Qualifications:
- Completion of high school.
- Related post-secondary diploma/degree in Chemical Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology, Alternative Energy.
- First Aid, TDG, and WHMIS are assets.
- A minimum of one year of demonstrated hands-on training or experience in a wet chemistry laboratory is essential.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, MS Teams is required.

Remuneration: $42,521.44 - $54,088.06 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification – Research Technologist I).
This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
