Job Summary
The Lab of Dr. Joanne Weinberg will be looking to hire a Research Assistant/Technician 5 to join the team on an hourly appointment.
Organizational Status
The Research Assistant/Technician 5 will report directly to the PI. Dr. Joanne Weinberg.
Work Performed

  • Develops new specialized techniques that become industry/discipline standards employed nationwide.
  • Researches, designs and analyzes the results of novel experiments.
  • Makes development proposals for follow up experimentation as a result of performing and interpreting the results of complex technical procedures.
  • Provides complex analysis of samples as part of a facility that provides an external service, using state of the art instruments with many cutting edge technologies.
  • Acts as a consultant to external research facilities, to provide technical advice and/or complex analysis of research data some of which leads to joint authorship of scientific papers.
  • Collaborates with others, internally and externally, in the development of new techniques and conducting joint experiments.
  • Supervises research projects of graduate students, post doctoral fellows and visiting scientists that relate to area of technical expertise, advising on the design of experiments, the development and revision of research protocols and providing guidance to the interpretation and analysis of research.
  • Provides technical consultation, advice and instruction to faculty members, researchers, and graduate and post doctoral students in the appropriate use, selection and modification of specialized techniques in area of expertise.
  • Liaises with other technical experts and may be called upon to provide advice in field of expertise.
  • Contributes to leading edge reports; writes ethics and grant applications.
  • Reviews papers and/or new protocols and provides comment in area of expertise at the request of outside sources.
  • May oversee the technical functioning of a lab engaged in complex research.
  • May attend scientific meetings and present posters and papers.
  • Keeps abreast of techniques and development in field of expertise.
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
Wide latitude for exercising independent initiative and judgment in the performance of specialized duties and responsibilities.
Supervision Received
Works independently under administrative direction.
Supervision Given
May be required to provide direction to other staff members; oversees the academic work of and demonstrates techniques to students as required.
Minimum Qualifications
University degree in relevant discipline or completion of a technical program and a minimum five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.
