Job Summary
To provide technical support and assist in various projects related to clinical trials, both drug and device. The job will involve both clinical-based and standard wet lab-based projects.
Organizational Status
The applicant will be located at St. Paul's Hospital in the UBC Centre for Heart Lung Innovation. All work will be done indoors and full access to all necessary safety equipment and training will be provided. Hazards include: working with human blood, tissue, and fluid samples, cytotoxic agents (cytokines, apoptosis inducing agents) and the handling of potentially hazardous chemicals (eg. ethidium bromide). The applicant will report directly to the principal investigator, with interactions and liaisons with research technicians and students.
Work Performed

- Processing and shipping blood and urine samples for clinical trials.
- Processing patients’ blood samples and extracting sample DNA for clinical research.
- Maintaining research records and database, entering data according to established protocols.
- Biobanking samples, recording sample inventories and shipping samples to research collaborators.
- Assisting clinical trial by receiving drugs and equipment, organizing and filing equipment/records.
- Ordering equipment, reagents and lab supplies; liaising with vendors, institutional finance and procurement departments.

  *   Operating, maintaining and troubleshooting problems with standard equipment.
  *   Organizing laboratory and stock, maintaining inventory.
  *   Preparing sanitizing solutions and lab materials for routine laboratory use.
  *   Other related duties as required.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
Carelessness during the performance of duties in the laboratory could jeopardize the progress of research projects. RA is required to conduct all research activities in an ethical manner following approved guidelines.
Supervision Received
The principal investigator and senior technicians will be responsible for training and supervising the candidate. This position will be supervised by the Research Manager.
Supervision Given
None, but may explain work to others such as summer students or co-op students.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a life sciences discipline required. Effective oral and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Must be fastidious with respect to lab records and protocols. An understanding of or background in genetics and gene expression including techniques such as PCR, cell culture, flow cytometry and ELISAs would be a strong asset. Experience in training others is an asset. Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
