Offer Description

Do you want to make a difference to the growing number of individuals dealing with a lifelong, chronic disease with no known cause or cure?  Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one of the leading causes of disability in young adults today.  An exciting Research Associate position is now available in the Department of Medicine (Division of Neurology) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) – in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The Research Associate (RA) will be a contributing member of the Tremlett lab / Pharmacoepidemiology in MS research group, led by Dr. Helen Tremlett. With the vision of fostering excellence in multi-disciplinary clinical, therapeutic, and epidemiological research to advance knowledge and improve the well-being of those affected by multiple sclerosis (MS), the Tremlett research group thrives on diversity.  Team members are trained in variety of disciplines, creating a truly interdisciplinary approach to research.

The RA will be involved in a number of different studies, the primary ones being:

An exciting multi-site international collaboration, accessing health administrative databases linked with clinical data, to advance understanding of the multiple sclerosis prodrome or ‘pre-MS trait’ (e.g., joint MS Society of Canada and US National MS Society; November 9th 2021 news item – https://mssociety.ca/resources/news?province=BC ). Most diseases start well before they are actually diagnosed. Some allow for medical identification and intervention by giving early warning signs that may appear hours, weeks, or years before diagnosis (e.g. stroke, cancer or multiple sclerosis).

Ongoing cross-Canada multi-site collaborations, accessing health administrative databases linked with clinical data, to assess issues such as the impact of comorbidities in MS, and drug safety and effectiveness in MS.

Studies related to the gut microbiome and MS (pediatric-onset MS)

Several publications have already resulted from these studies (see PubMed).

The RA will play a key role in the success of the studies including: hypotheses generation, study design, accessing and linking data ensuring data integrity, statistical analyses and interpretation, presentation of findings, and drafting and publication of scientific manuscripts and grant writing. The RA will work largely independently but within a team comprised of researchers, postdoctoral fellows, research staff, biostatistician, and students.
