The Clean Technologies Team (CleanTech) at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) provides scientific expertise in the areas of clean technologies, chemical engineering, environmental science, and industrial microbiology, and delivers applied research services to support regional, national and multinational companies that operate in the resource, energy, and clean technologies sectors.

The primary areas of research focus of CleanTech are the development of methods and technologies to characterize and add value to industrial residual materials, wastes, and by-products through the application of microbiology and chemical principles in collaboration with industrial partners. CleanTech operates as an industry-driven, highly multidisciplinary applied research facility fully integrated with the Campus Alberta system.

The successful candidate for this Research Associate position will join a highly diverse, inclusive and supportive team of research professionals with backgrounds in microbiology, chemical engineering, environmental science, and applied chemistry. The new team member will have specialized expertise in analytical chemistry, conversions of biomass, particularly for soil application, and be an enthusiastic individual with a strong aptitude for teamwork and collaboration, comfort with failure, patience, eye for detail, tenacity, unshakable optimism, and keen sense of humor. This new team member will work on a portfolio of multidisciplinary projects in close collaboration with a consortium of industry partners and other Applied Research Centres within NAIT.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and conduct a variety of laboratory-based analyses of soils, soil amendments, biomass, etc. using a variety of analytical techniques and instruments
  • Conduct research in the area of biomass conversion including using chemical, thermal, etc. approaches and conducting characterization of intermediates and products
  • Compile and interpret data including statistical analysis
  • Developing lab techniques and protocols
  • Reviewing and/or writing reports and proposals
  • Prepare presentations and communicate results and observations effectively between project teams and industry partners as needed
  • Develop and execute experimental plans with minimal oversight

 

Skills & Abilities:

  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work independently without supervision, work in a multidisciplinary team, and participate in team culture
  • Experience performing analysis of and characterizing biomass and soil samples in a research setting is essential; experience in industrial settings is a major asset
  • Experience with liquid and gas chromatography, ICP-OES and ICP-MS, elemental analyzers, TOC, and BET analyzers is a major asset
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
  • Knowledge is advanced statistics is an asset
  • Experience in experimental design and method optimization
  • Experience with proposal writing and preparing technical reports
  • Experience with bioinformatics is an asset

 

Qualifications:

  • PhD. or MSc. in Analytical Chemistry or a related field. A BSc. will be considered with 4 or more years of directly related experience in a research lab
  • Minimum of 2 years of related laboratory work experience
  • Equivalencies may be considered

 

Remuneration: $71,098.04 - $95,372.94 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification – Research Associate l).

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
