OVERVIEW:
The Department of Molecular Genetics in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto invites applications for the position of Research Associate (Limited Term) to participate in research focused on (i) the development of solution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy for studies of high molecular weight complexes and liquid-liquid phase separation and (ii) application of the developed methodologies to CAPRIN ‘scaffold’, protein/RNA ‘client’ condensates currently under study in the laboratory.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates require a Ph.D. with research expertise in NMR methods development and application, as well as at least 2-3 years of post-doctoral training. Detailed understanding of pulse sequence coding, quantum mechanics of NMR experiments, and Redfield relaxation theory is required. Experience in assignment of NMR spectra of proteins, and analysis of relaxation data, including CPMG and CEST datasets, is essential. Experience in protein expression and purification is also necessary. Candidates must also be able to prepare manuscripts for submission to peer reviewed publications/journals and in to present findings at meetings and conferences. Candidates must also have experience designing, planning, and executing experiments and research. Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills are required, and a proven ability to work positively with others in a collaborative laboratory environment is an asset.

KEY DUTIES

  • Designing, planning, and executing NMR projects. 
  • Development of new NMR pulse sequences, tailored to probing specific questions in hand.
  • Development of code for the analysis of new NMR experiments.
  • Generation of NMR samples using expression methods and labelling strategies available to the laboratory.
  • Assisting other members of the laboratory in setting up sophisticated NMR experiments.
  • Reading published papers relevant to the experiments being performed and adapting procedures accordingly.
  • Liaising with collaborators and assisting in the compilation, analysis, and reporting of research findings to researchers within and outside of the program.
  • Preparing manuscripts for submission to peer reviewed publications/journals.
  • Presenting findings at local, national, and international conferences.

Beyond these responsibilities, the individual will be expected to participate in the preparation of grant applications and in the supervision of technical support personnel and research trainees. At all times, the individual will be expected to support the overall research and teaching missions of the lab.
