Description:

 Applications are invited for appointment as Research Associate in Photonics in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, at the University of Toronto. This is a part-time (25% FTE) position for a research associate to work with Prof. Joyce Poon and her research group to conduct research in silicon integrated photonics.

The successful candidate will have a successful record in working in the field of foundry silicon photonics (e.g., simulation and design, layout, characterization). The candidate will be responsible for (1) managing projects with photonics foundries, (2) overseeing custom wafer runs, (3) managing projects with sponsors, and (4) providing support and assistance to other research group members.

The candidate should have extensive experience in (a) silicon photonics design, testing, and packaging, (b) using a broad range of optical and electronic instruments in the lab, including but not limited to various diode laser sources, fiber coupling, electronic and RF components and instruments, data acquisition units; (c) providing research support and mentorship to students and postdoctoral fellows. The successful candidate will report to Prof. Joyce Poon.

Duties:

• Collaborate with the team to complete projects in silicon integrated photonics
• Train students and postdoctoral fellows on silicon photonic design (computer-aided design tools) and measurements
• Manage wafer runs with foundries and partnerships with suppliers and project sponsors
• Supervise the design and execution of the chips and microsystems
• Planning and designing experiments
• Stay up-to-date with relevant literature and emerging research trends
• Provide project support and mentoring for research team members
• Perform duties to enable the safe and efficient operation of the lab
• Develop and execute research vision with PI to achieve research goals
• The research associate is expected to publish at conferences and in journals

Qualifications:

• PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics)
• Minimum of five (5) years of postdoctoral experience with demonstrated expertise in integrated silicon photonics
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience in working with photonic foundries and the design-fab-test cycle
• Working experience in a research environment
• Demonstrated leadership and team management abilities
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
