Job Summary
The Research Assistant Technician assists in conducting research activities for the Division of Plastic Surgery at BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH). The incumbent performs tasks to support research studies including assisting with study participant recruitment and data collection.
Organizational Status

The UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgery educates students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and pursues research to make innovative advancements in knowledge and practice to improve health. The Department consists of more than 600 physicians, surgeons, scientists and educators and over 70 administrative, research and technical staff in nine divisions distributed across British Columbia. Specialty training programs are offered in Cardiac Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. The Department is also home to the Branch for Global Surgical Care (BGSC).

The incumbent reports to the Research Supervisor, Dr. Erika Henkelman, and will take direction from each plastic surgeon (Principal Investigators). On a daily basis, the Clinical Research Manager may provide direction and assignments to the Research Assistant Technician. The incumbent interacts closely with members of the plastic surgery clinical staff as well as those in other laboratories and clinics at BCCH.


Work Performed

  • Recruit and coordinate study participant populations.

  • Communicate with participants (parents/children) to facilitate ongoing research activities; communicate with staff and clinicians on site and at collaborating sites to ensure adherence to research protocols.

  • Develop and maintain relationships to ensure participant compliance throughout the life cycle of the research project.

  • Conduct research surveys and collect survey data.

  • Collect patient data from health records for research purposes.

  • Attend research project meetings.

  • Assist with study planning including drafting protocols, consent, and ethics applications.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Consequence of Error/Judgement

The incumbent is required to conduct all research activities in an ethical manner, suited to the proper activities of the University of British Columbia. Any procedures or data recorded as part of the studies must be accurate and must accurately reflect the work performed. The incumbent needs to pay attention to details, be aware of pitfalls and willing to repeat tasks if necessary. Strict confidentiality of all study participants must be adhered to. All activities involving participants are accountable to the Principal Investigators, the Department Head.

Inappropriate disclosure of confidential personal information would contravene privacy legislation and could result in legal action. Errors in data, reference materials or publications, if detected, would result in delays and requirements for additional resources to obtain or validate data. The Research Assistant Technician is expected to work in a professional manner following ICH GCP guidelines, exercising poise and discretion especially when dealing with vulnerable patients and their families, and with sensitive medical information.


Supervision Received
The incumbent reports directly to Dr. Erika Henkelman and may receive direction from  the Principal Investigators.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a relevant technical program undergraduate degree in a related field and at least three years’ related experience are required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
