Job Summary

The research assistant will support research projects that aim to improve the health and quality of care for women diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing breast reconstruction in British Columbia. The research assistant will support research activities through ethics applications, data collection, data analysis and knowledge translation activities.

The Breast Reconstruction Program in the Division of Plastic Surgery at UBC focuses on research that aims to improve the health and quality of care for women diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing breast reconstruction in British Columbia.


Organizational Status

The UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgery educates students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and pursues research to make innovative advancements in knowledge and practice to improve health. The Department consists of more than 600 physicians, surgeons, scientists and educators and over 70 administrative, research and technical staff in nine divisions distributed across British Columbia. Specialty training programs are offered in Cardiac Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. The Department is also home to the Branch for Global Surgical Care (BGSC).



The research assistant will report directly to the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Kathryn Isaac, who leads research projects within the UBC Breast Reconstruction program. The research assistant will also receive guidance and direction from the clinical research coordinator and may collaborate with fellow Research Assistants and medical students. They will work with a multidisciplinary team of physicians, surgeons and clinical researchers within the Breast Reconstruction Program in the Division of Plastic Surgery.


Work Performed

  • Supports research project development activities including assisting with writing protocols, ethics approvals, operational approvals and piloting study methods.

  • Assists with data collection through survey distribution, conducting interviews and data extraction from electronic medical records.

  • Contacts study participants to obtain or follow up for data collection procedures.

  • Assists with  quantitative and qualitative data analysis using SPSS, R Stata and NVivo software. Training for use of these programs will be provided on the job.

  • Assists knowledge translation activities through the development manuscripts at study completion and presentation of study results at lab meetings and conferences.

  • Contributes to a respectful, inclusive working environment.

  • Performs other responsibilities, as required.


Consequence of Error/Judgement

Errors in judgement may impact quality of data and research performed by the UBC Breast Reconstruction program. It is crucial the research assistants have excellent attention to detail and are motivated to support breast cancer patients and related research.
Supervision Received

The research assistant will report directly the Principal Investigator, a Plastics and Reconstruction Surgeon, and receive indirect support and guidance form the Clinical Research Coordinator.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own

  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Effective oral and written communications, with the ability to compose clear and grammatically correct correspondence and technical documents.

  • Excellent organizational skills, particularly in the area of prioritizing work, multi-tasking. Interpersonal skills, along with the ability to work in a team environment and independently.

  • Experience in working in a research environment and/or with clinical populations is an asset.

  • Experience using research platforms including REDCap data management software, literature databases (i.e., Pubmed, Ovid, Ebscohost) and reference managers (Mendeley or similar) is an asset.

  • Familiarity with medical terminology is an asset
