Job Summary
To assist with field work on large lakes in remote settings and data analysis
Organizational Status
The Research Assistant reports to the Professor in-charge and interacts with graduate students and other research assistants in the team.
Work Performed

Assists with planning, conducting, field experiments or research work by performing specific assigned tasks, such as, developing safety plans, setting up and deploying self-recording instruments.


Assists in analyzing and interpreting research data by performing tasks, such as, assembly, compilation and summary of recorded data.


Utilizing standard techniques and protocols performs various technical tasks.


Operates, maintains and troubleshoots problems with standard field equipment.


Organizes laboratory and stock, maintains inventory and distributes supplies.


May distribute work assignments to employees at lower classification levels and initiate new employees into routines, procedures and operation of equipment.

Be involved in all aspects of the study of the physical limnology of Base Mine Lake in the oil sands region of Alberta.  This will involve:

  • Preparation for, and participation in, field trips to Base Mine Lake to install new instrumentation, service existing instrumentation, and download data (Valid driver’s license required).
  • Detailed analysis and processing of the data, and the writing of summary reports and papers for journal publication.
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

  • Participation in laboratory experimentation and numerical modelling related to Base Mine Lake.
     


Consequence of Error/Judgement

Expensive, delicate scientific equipment could be damaged if not handled safely. Risk of loss of data if instruments not deployed correctly. Risk or injury or death if safety protocols not followed while working from small power boats in remote settings.

None. May coordinate the work of some graduate students.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
