Professor in Radiobiology

The Université de Sherbrooke is calling for candidates for a full-time, tenure-track position of assistant professor in radiobiology in the Department of Nuclear Medicine and Radiobiology at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences .

The candidates will have a strong background in Radiation Sciences or in other closely associated fields such as Biology, Biochemistry and Immunology, with expectations to pursue preclinical and/or clinical research. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a robust, innovative research program to understand and solve the complex problems underlying the radiotherapy of cancer using external beam and/or radionuclide therapy. The overall goal is to improve treatment outcomes by increasing tumor eradication and/or reducing side effects. Examples include: studying radiation-induced metabolic reprogramming, the loss of cell cycle controls, metastatic progression, cancer cell invasion, the anti-tumor immune and inflammatory responses, the FLASH effect in radiotherapy, radiation-induced activation of cGAS-STING pathways, prevention or sparing of radiation-induced damage to healthy tissues, changes in cancer cell radiation sensitivity, radiation-induced DNA sensors (AIM2, cGAS), and the role of miRNA and ncRNA in developing radioresistance. Inclusion of imaging will be positively evaluated.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Nuclear Medicine and Radiobiology was founded in 1968. It is composed of thirty professors, many of whom are associated with the Institute of Cancer Research of Université de Sherbrooke and the Cancer Axis of the Centre de recherche du Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke (CRCHUS). The Department includes two clinical services, that of Nuclear Medicine and that of Radiation Oncology with 16 clinician professors. In addition, the Department hosts a large team of highly qualified personnel to support researchers.

We offer an exceptional multidisciplinary research environment with access to small animal and cell irradiation facilities, production of radioisotopes by two cyclotrons, radiotracers, contrast agents, and we provide access to preclinical (MRI, PET, optical) and clinical imaging (PET, MRI). This equipment and that of numerous other technological platforms combined with the expertise of physicists, chemists, biologists, engineers, imaging scientists and specialized physicians make of our Department a fertile ground for the development of novel approaches in Imaging, Radiobiology and Radiation Therapy. Structured and sustained mentorship will be provided to the candidate selected in order to ensure their success.

Duties

Successful candidates will:

• Teach in the three university cycles in programs of FMSS and actively engage in the supervision of medical residents and postdoctoral fellows.
• Supervise graduate students.
• Develop a competitive research program funded by external grants.
• Obtain a salary award from provincial or national programs.
• Contribute to University life and to society.

Requirements

Successful candidates will:

• Hold a doctorate degree (Ph.D.) and postdoctoral experience in Radiation Sciences, Radiobiology or the equivalent.
• Have 2 to 4 years of postdoctoral training in a relevant field.
• Have experience in the teaching/training of students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Have a strong interest and abilities for teaching, university pedagogy as well as for research, development and innovation.
• Demonstrate excellent leadership and communication skills for efficient and harmonious interactions with internal and external partners. Have an excellent publication record.
• Demonstrate an ability to create and maintain agreeable relationships, to collaborate with clinicians and to work as part of a team.
• Be able to teach in French within 2 years. Laboratory activities can be in English.
• Comply with the guidelines on responsible conduct of research .  

Work conditions

Work conditions are set by an agreement between Université de Sherbrooke and the Association des professeures et professeurs de la Faculté de médecine de l'Université de Sherbrooke (APPFMUS).

Regular, full-time tenure-track position.

Anticipated start date: September 2025
