Position Description

Area:  Biosensors for Early Detection of Diseases
Duration:  1 year renewable
Start Date:  Immediate
Annual Stipend: $45,000 to $55,000 CAD per year plus University of Calgary Plan C Benefits

The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary and Cumming School of Medicine is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in the areas of Biosensors for Disease Detection.

Job Description:

We are interested in recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to join an interdisciplinary research team developing a novel way to detect biomarkers related to various human diseases. The work will also involve the development, design, modelling, testing and application aspects of multi-modal biosensors.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent in Engineering or a related field with a focus in one or more areas, including biosensor design and fabrication, nanomaterials for sensor application, quartz crystal balance (QCM) biosensors, early diagnosis of infectious diseases or cancer
  • Familiarity or background knowledge in various biosensing mechanisms for disease detection is an asset
  • Miniaturize and automate existing lab-based assays and test them in laboratory conditions
  • Design, develop, and integrate a miniaturized biosensor module with optical or electronic detection into an automated system
  • Integrate a reader platform for a biosensor towards developing a stand-alone portable prototype suitable for deployment in case of need
  • The applicant should be motivated and possess excellent oral and written communication skills
  • The successful candidates will have a proven record of success and be able to conduct research independently as well as be part of a team
