Job Summary

The laboratory of Dr. Paul Pavlidis, in the Departments of Psychiatry and the Michael Smith Laboratories at the University of British Columbia, is seeking an ambitious and highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow in computational biology / bioinformatics. The Pavlidis lab works on the development, evaluation, and application of computational methods to understand gene function and regulation, with a biological focus on the nervous system. The Michael Smith Laboratories (MSL; https://www.msl.ubc.ca/) is a dynamic hub for groundbreaking research and education excellence. Our highly interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment supports faculty with focus in genomics, molecular biology, engineering, and biotechnology. Organizational Status

The position is in the Pavlidis lab, based in the Michael Smith Laboratories at the Point Grey Campus.  Will work as part of a team in Dr. Pavlidis’ lab (approx. 15 personnel including trainees and staff).

Work Performed

The position will play a key role in funded projects directed at large-scale analysis of gene expression and other genomics data (including single-cell data), with applications to the study of human brain function, disease, and genetics. There are also opportunities to collaborate with data-generating researchers at UBC, and to mentor more junior team members. The position will have latitude to develop new lines of inquiry and approaches within the general themes of the laboratory’s interests.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, statistics, genomics/genetics or a related field.

  • Proven computational skills in genomics data analysis and bioinformatics, ideally including method development and evaluation.

  • Proven ability to initiate, develop and complete projects.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Background and interest in cellular, molecular and/or developmental neuroscience.

Supervision Received:

Reports to Dr. Paul Pavlidis. The PDF will work with a high degree of independence and set priorities under broad directives from Dr. Pavlidis.
