Post Doctoral Fellow, Community Health and Epidemiology

Location: Saskatoon, SASKATCHEWAN

Primary Purpose: Applications are invited for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellowship starting September 1st 2024 (or as soon as a qualified applicant is selected) in the Built Environment and Active Populations (BEAP) Lab in the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology at the University of Saskatchewan. The position is a one-year appointment with the potential for renewal.


The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Fuller (University of Saskatchewan) and Dr. Nancy Ross (Queen’s University). The postdoctoral fellow will work on projects related to Dr. Fuller and Ross’ research program including:

1. Calculating spatial metrics for urban form in Canada including Can-ALE, Urban Sprawl, and Gentrification for the 2021 census year.

2. Conducting comparative research to examine changes in urban form metrics over time in Canada

3. Using longitudinal data (eg., Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts (CanCHECs)) to examine longitudinal associations between urban form metrics and health outcomes.

Nature of Work: The Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to be involved in, or responsible for, the following:

  • Conducting novel independent research
  • Presentation of research results in the form of publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Assisting their faculty supervisor in guiding graduate students' research
  • Collaborate with team members to initiate new projects

Accountabilities: The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Fuller (University of Saskatchewan) and Dr. Nancy Ross (Queen’s University).s

Education: Ph.D. in Public Health, Geography, Urban Planning, Computer Science, or related field

Licenses: NA

Experience: Candidates will gain knowledge in the fields of GIS, public health, and spatial data science.

Skills: A strong research record

o Ability to work independently

o Strong interpersonal skills, excellent writing, and good oral communication skills

o Required data analysis experience

  • GIS data
  • Spatial statistics

o Required programming experience:

  • R, SQL, or Python
  • ArcGIS or QGIS
