The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, in partnership with Alberta Health Services, is inviting applications for the Academic Division Director of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine, and Clinical Section Head in the Department of Neurosciences. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, the Faculty has been internationally recognized among the world’s top 50 medical schools, and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. The University is currently home to more than 38,000 students with more than 15,000 faculty and staff.

The Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Alberta is focused on ensuring excellence in clinical practice, research and teaching. 

The Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Alberta is focused on ensuring excellence in clinical practice, research and teaching. It currently provides clinical services to all acute care facilities in Edmonton, and consultative service to Northern Alberta and most of the northern territories. Specialty programs in Infection Control, HIV and Hepatitis Care, and Transplant Infectious Diseases have been established, multiplying the opportunities for clinical, epidemiologic and bench research, and for medical education. The Division boasts one of the longest-running and most highly-regarded Canadian postgraduate training programs in Infectious Diseases, and has recently-established a fellowship program in Transplant Infectious Diseases. It continues to enjoy a close working relationship with Provincial and regional microbiology laboratories, and with regional Public Health officials. In an era of increasingly complex, subspecialized, institutionally-based medical care; of pandemic infectious disease; and of multi-drug-resistant pathogens, the challenges and rewards for the Division and its members have never been greater. 

The Division Director and Section Head is responsible for all recruitment, research, education, and clinical services of Infectious Disease at the University of Alberta in the Edmonton Zone.  She or he is expected to be a leader who will further develop the Division to remain among the top Infectious Diseases groups worldwide and advance the clinical, research and educational mandate within the Department of Medicine.

The Alberta Health Services Clinical Section Head for Infectious Diseases is responsible for the delivery of all Infectious Diseases services in the Edmonton Zone. This includes four major urban teaching and four smaller community hospitals.  The University Hospital furthermore, is the major referral center for Northern Alberta and the Northern regions of adjoining provinces and territories.  The Infectious Disaeses Section Head is responsible for developing, maintaining and implementing service plans to meet current and future demands for Neurological care in the Edmonton Zone and its referral regions.

The Department is seeking a dynamic, visionary leader who will be supportive of all elements in the Division. The successful candidate will be an active advocate for the Division, and will be collegial and consultative in his or her leadership to drive educational innovation, maximize research output within the Division and lead strategic growth initiatives. 

The successful candidate will be an MD (or equivalent) with relevant clinical qualifications in Infectious Diseases recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent certification body.  Candidate must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) as clinical service is required as part of this appointment. The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor within the Department, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement, and offers a comprehensive benefits package.

He or she will be recognized internationally through scholarly accomplishment in research and teaching.  Administrative experience in an academic setting is an asset.
