The Midwifery Program, Department of Family Practice at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a full-time Lecturer (1.0 FTE) to be part of a newly developing Vancouver Island cohort for a 5-year term with a possibility of renewal.

This position is located within a health-care facility. Therefore, this position requires successful verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by the provincial health mandate.

The Department of Family Practice educates students, physicians, and midwives to be effective providers of patient-centered care in the context of family and community. The Department of Family Practice has over 4,000 academic and clinical faculty members, who are physicians, midwives and other clinicians, working in 20 sites across the province to ensure more people have access to medical care that has continuity, is comprehensive, and serves community needs. Academic and clinical faculty members mentor and supervise midwifery and medical students in community midwifery and family practice offices.

The UBC Midwifery Program includes a Bachelor Degree in Midwifery (BMw), the Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program (IEMBP), a Continuing Professional Development program, a Global Health program and funded midwifery researchers. The BMw admits 32 students annually into the four-year degree and the IEMBP admits 16 students annually into its nine-month program. Both programs focus on applicants who will practice in British Columbia.

Working under the direction of the Director of the Midwifery Program and reporting to the Head, Department of Family Practice, this individual will be highly engaged in teaching and evaluation activities. This includes course-based lectures, seminars and tutors, individual and group discussions, and supervision of student’s work. The Lecturer will directly facilitate and enhance the overall classroom experience for students and will be assigned roles such as individual teaching and/or co-teaching with another faculty member as course leads. Additionally, the incumbent will provide mentorship and training to undergraduate learners. The majority of assigned coursework will be for undergraduate students in the Bachelor of Midwifery program, although assigned courses and deliverables may vary. The candidate will be working in collaboration with other course leads, undergraduate program leads, and the Director. The successful candidate will participate in relevant service activities within the Department.

The successful candidate will be part of a new Midwifery teaching team based on Vancouver Island and is expected to be able to teach at identified hospital sites in Victoria, BC regularly. The successful candidate will liaise with midwifery program faculty on Vancouver Island to develop clinical experiences for UBC BMw midwifery students. The Vancouver Island cohort will be supported by the Midwifery Undergraduate Program Lead. The incumbent will also be provided formal mentorship from other Midwifery faculty members including the Clinical Placement Lead, Associate Professor of Teaching, Assistant Professor of Teaching, program staff, and Lecturer.

The successful incumbent will have the following training and qualifications as outlined below:

  • Master’s degree in Midwifery or related field such as Public Health, Nursing, etc.; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Registration in good standing or eligibility to register with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives.
  • Five (5) years or more experience in clinical practice, or an equivalent combination of teaching and clinical experience
  • Demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching, and the promise to achieve excellence in teaching
  • Previous experience teaching Midwifery at a university level preferred
  • Knowledge of or experience with international practices of Midwifery is an asset
  • In addition, the successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with empathy, understanding and, respect of diverse perspectives.
  • Experience in collaborating and bringing forward projects with diverse groups, including colleagues, students, and/or stakeholders, is valued.

The expected salary for this position will be $110,000 per annum.
