JOB SUMMARY 


UBC Facilities provides comprehensive facilities maintenance, operations and renovation services for lands and buildings owned by the University of British Columbia. The Municipal Services group is responsible for providing waste management services, soft and hard landscape services, as well as moving and general labour services for all of the Vancouver campus.  


This posting could be for one of three roles within the Municipal Services group: 


Soft Landscape -  This team cares for all aspects of landscaping including lawn care, turf management, watering/irrigation, tree care, weed mitigation, and garden bed maintenance.   


Streets and Operations Support - This team engages in the ongoing hard landscape maintenance (e.g. roads, sidewalks), moving services and project trades support.  


The successful candidate may be required to move between roles from time to time. 


 


ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS 


The Labourer 2 reports to the Municipal Manager and receives daily work assignments and directions a supervisor. Responsibilities are performed both independently as well as with others.  


 


WORK PERFORMED 


Soft Landscape  


  • Assists in landscaping and labour duties including mowing lawns, line trimming, hedge trimming, weeding, planting, seeding, pruning, watering, and tree care. 

  • Performs work with specialized tools/equipment, including but not limited to shovels, rakes, hoes, line trimmers, hedge trimmers, lawn mowers, and backpack blowers. 

  • Operates a variety of vehicles and specialized maintenance equipment, including but not limited to utility vehicles, pickup trucks, roll-off trucks, dump trucks, skid steers, back hoes, tractors, and boom lifts. 


Streets and Operations Support  


  • Assists in hard landscape and other general labour duties using specialized equipment and physical effort. 


  • Performs work with specialized tools/equipment, including but not limited to power washers, jack hammers, tampers, concrete vibrators, concrete/asphalt coring and cutting equipment, sandblasting equipment, and pallet jacks. 

  • Operates a variety of vehicles and specialized maintenance equipment, including but not limited to utility vehicles, pickup trucks, moving vans, dump trucks, street sweepers, boom lifts, scissor lifts, and backhoes. 


 


All Roles  


  • Requests and receives tools, equipment and material for the work assigned. 
    Completes all required training to perform the job safely and is to be familiar with safety procedures and policies of the University. 

  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification. 


 


On occasion, may be required to work on weekends, evenings, or overnight as needed to assist with weather-related events (i.e. a heavy windstorm or snowfall).  


 


CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR 


The Labourer 2 determines the most efficient and effective way to operate equipment to perform work; incorrect decisions generally result in minor delays. 


 


SUPERVISION RECEIVED 


The Labourer 2 reports to the Manager, Municipal Services and receives daily work assignments and directions from the Sub-Head or Head . The Labourer 2 works from oral and written instructions and according to established departmental policies and procedures. 


 


SUPERVISION GIVEN 


The Labourer 2 may be required to monitor the work of a group of labourers in an assigned area to ensure work is being performed correctly and in a timely fashion. 


 


QUALIFICATIONS 


High School graduation and Valid B.C. Driver's License. Secondary school education and/or completion of high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid and subsisting drivers license with a satisfactory driving record. Ability to follow policies, procedures, and instructions. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships. the equivalent combination of education and experience.
