Job Summary
UBC SPPH Professor of Occupational and Environmental Health (OEH) is seeking a qualified and highly motivated individual to assist with fieldwork and data analysis of occupational exposure data related to both chemical and physical hazards.
Organizational Status

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of a research professor within the OEH division and other national and international collaborators on research projects on the risk of chemical and physical exposures.

Housed within the Faculty of Medicine, the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) is an innovative unit that encompasses many of the health-related groupings at UBC as a collaborative venture. The School is structured around four divisions: Occupational and Environmental Health; Health Services and Policy; Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health Practice; and Health in Populations.


Work Performed

  • Research and develop occupational exposure measurement projects

  • Prepare and maintain occupational hygiene sampling equipment

  • Apply appropriate quality assurance and control criteria to field work

  • Conduct occupational exposure measurement field work

  • Maintain exposure databases, collect and analyse exposure data

  • Develop technical reports, and summary reports and presentations for various stakeholder groups

  • Liaise with OHS staff in participating sites to ensure successful implementation of occupational hygiene activities

  • Other relevant work as identified by supervisor


Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors and misjudgment could result in loss of critical data or erroneous results being published, delays in completing time-critical grant development, and in completing research and service contracts.
Supervision Received
The applicant is expected to work independently under the primary supervision of Professor Davies, principal investigator and a Certified Industrial Hygienist.
Supervision Given
May oversee graduate or undergraduate students.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum of three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own

  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • MSc degree in occupational hygiene

  • Familiarity with occupational hygiene resources and scientific literature

  • Ability to develop chemical and physical exposure assessment plans

  • Experience in collecting occupational exposure measurements

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with study participants

  • Excellent organizational kills

  • Ability to work effectively independently

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written

  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports

  • Class 5 Driver license
