Job Description

Under general direction of Supervisor Grounds and Gardens, the Grounds Worker is responsible for maintaining the grounds within the entire National Historic Site where Royal Roads University is located. The Grounds Worker is primarily responsible for a variety of grounds keeping duties, some of which require basic skills and abilities common to the horticulture trade. At times will be required to work closely with gardeners and perform gardens work as directed. This position delivers grounds services as part of the gardens and service team within the National Heritage Site and promotes customer service and a professional front-door image presented by the University.  

The incumbent must be capable of periods of high intensity physical work and have an ability to work flexible hours as required to meet operational needs. The incumbent must have the physical capacity to lift, carry and place heavy loads as a routine requirement of the position. As well, must be able to operate all machinery related to grounds and garden work. Some occasional minor repairs to maintain equipment in operation may be necessary. At times, may be required to meet the operational needs of the university team department including working in extreme weather conditions or assisting with other teams.
 


Job Requirements

Qualifications 

Required:
⦁    Completion of grade 12 from a secondary school or equivalent.
⦁    Possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s license in the Province of B. C.
⦁    1-year gardening work experience, or completion of horticulture trade certificate.  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
To be successful in this position, the incumbent must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
⦁    Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
⦁    Ability to work in all types of weather conditions.
⦁    Ability to safely operate equipment related to the duties.
⦁    Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
⦁    General knowledge of safe procedures involved in the work performed.

Preferred:
⦁    Possession of a valid B.C. Pesticide Applicator License.
⦁    Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and the use of Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
 


Additional Information
This is a seasonal position working 37.5 hours per week from May to September 30, 2024. The successful candidate must have the ability to work a variety of shifts including weekends. This is a CUPE Local 3886 Bargaining Unit position and the hourly rate is $23.96 and the university is pleased to offer a percentage of salary in lieu of benefits.
