Assistant Teaching Professor

Limited-term Assistant Teaching Professor in Clinical Psychology

Job Summary
The Department of Psychology at the University of Victoria invites applications for a two-year limited-term Assistant Teaching Professor position in Clinical Psychology to commence July 1, 2024. The successful applicant will be expected to teach 7 semester-length courses per year (typically a 3-3-1 distribution with the ability to teach more than one class per course topic). Teaching assignments will include core undergraduate courses in the Mental Health and Wellbeing stream. There may also be occasional opportunities to teach a graduate course or to serve as Acting Director of the Psychology Clinic as part of the regular teaching load. Limited-Term Assistant Teaching Professors in Psychology are not expected to supervise graduate or undergraduate student research but can serve on students’ committees if they wish. 

Salary Range
The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $101,477 - $125,354. Requirements

Required education: Qualified candidates will have a PhD in Clinical Psychology or a related field (e.g., Counselling Psychology) at the time of appointment. Further, qualified candidates will be registered or eligible for registration with the College of Psychologists of British Columbia.

Required experience and skills in teaching: Qualified candidates will demonstrate high-quality teaching in topics related to clinical psychology.

Examples:

• Demonstrates outstanding teaching abilities through their teaching materials, testimonials (student feedback, peer feedback, letters from referees), or other forms of documentation such as a teaching certification.
• Has experience or interest in teaching large undergraduate classes in topics related to clinical psychology.
• Demonstrates recognition of and openness to the diversity of student perspectives, experiences, and cultural contexts.
• Demonstrates recognition of power differentials within classroom dynamics, and respectful relationships with students.

Required experience and skills in scholarly activity: Qualified candidates will demonstrate a record of or interest in engaging in activities that enhance teaching ability or effectiveness.

Examples:

• Mastery of one’s field of knowledge and awareness of current scholarship in one’s area of specialization.
• Record of or interest in independent research on the scholarship of teaching and learning.
• Activities related to enhancing one’s ability to engage in research-enriched teaching or clinically relevant teaching.
• Demonstrates an openness to equity and inclusivity in teaching and learning, especially with respect to goals of decolonization and Indigenizing the curriculum.
• Innovative and culturally grounded teaching and/or research background that demonstrates expertise in studying Indigenous and/or multicultural approaches to clinical psychology.

Required knowledge and expertise: Qualified candidates will demonstrate expertise in their subject area.

Examples:

• Expertise in a field of study that contributes to the diversity of perspectives in clinical psychology.
• A background or interest in topics taught at the undergraduate level such as health psychology, child/adult psychopathology, prevention/intervention approaches, family violence, and neurodevelopmental / learning disorders.

Required experience and skills in service: Qualified candidates will demonstrate potential for collaboration and positive contributions to the department and university.

Examples:

• Demonstrates an interest in collaborating with current faculty on professional activities and/or identifies areas of growth or change within the department and/or university.
• Contributes to a positive workplace environment.
• Demonstrates an openness to equity and inclusivity.

The following are considered assets for this position: ability and commitment to mentor diverse graduate students (as teaching assistants) and undergraduate students in informal settings (student-led organizations) or through independent coursework, familiarity with educational technology such as learning management systems, and administrative experience in a group or individual practice setting.

Department of Psychology
In the Department of Psychology we strongly value candidates who share our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in teaching and scholarship and using scholarship to inform teaching. The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with a core group of dedicated Teaching Professors. For our undergraduate program, we offer Bachelors of Arts and Sciences, an Honours program, and combined majors with Biology and Computer Science. Active extracurricular programs include the Psychology Organization of Students, and Psi Chi, the International Honours Society for Psychology.
