    Professor with tenure and BC Leadership Chair in Marine Ecosystems and Global Change

    The School of Earth and Ocean Sciences (SEOS) and Department of Biology at the University of Victoria (UVic) are seeking applications for the endowed BC Leadership Chair in Marine Ecosystems and Global Change. The BC Leadership Chairs are designed to attract world-class faculty, strengthen the province’s capacity for innovative research, promote British Columbia as a centre for cutting-edge research, enhance economic development, and position the province as a leader in the knowledge-based economy. The successful applicant will be nominated by the University for a BC Leadership Chair and, upon approval by Innovate BC, will then be offered an appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure and hold a joint appointment in SEOS (0.6) and Biology (0.4). Successful nominees will commence their appointments by Fall 2024 at the earliest, and by Fall 2025 at the latest.

    The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine the final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive range of $155,000 - $175,000.     Applicants should be top-tier, established researchers in the area of marine systems and marine ecology in relation to the climate system whose accomplishments have made a major societal impact and who are acknowledged as world leaders in their fields. Applicants will propose an original, innovative research program of the highest quality that will advance the frontiers of research in the field on a global scale and benefit Canadians and others around the world. Applicants must also offer evidence of high-quality teaching, supervision, and mentorship, supporting diverse teams and establishing an equitable and inclusive research environment. Applicants must be full professors (or associate professors who expect to be promoted to the full professor level within two years). The BC Leadership Chair program does not place restrictions with respect to nationality or country of residence, but applicants are asked to indicate current citizenship status. Current UVic faculty members are not eligible to apply.

    In SEOS, our focus is the Earth System, the workings and interactions of its component parts including biological and physical processes. From the core/mantle and lithosphere to the ocean, biosphere, and atmosphere, we seek to understand the history of our planet and its future changes. We take advantage of our local environment as a natural laboratory to investigate the fundamental workings of the Earth System and as an ideal location for experiential learning by our undergraduate and graduate students. Our close collaborations with government agencies, private research organizations, and industry enrich our opportunities and those of our students.

    The Biology Department prides itself in its broad research expertise covering all major areas of biology from the molecular level to physiology to ecology and whole ecosystems. Research by our faculty and students addresses fundamental questions in marine biology, mathematical biology, evolution and genomics, neuroscience, plant biology, and global change ecology.  Our researchers leverage the incredible local environment for their work, and maximize the many collaborative research opportunities with federal and provincial government scientists.

    The University is located close to a number of governmental and non-governmental organizations with expertise in climate change and marine sciences  The successful candidate will be expected to leverage existing partnerships and foster new research initiatives with organizations such as, Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC), the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis (CCCma), the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC), the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS), and Hakai Institute to examine the impact of ongoing climate change on marine systems.

    • A cover letter highlighting motivation for applying, past accomplishments, future plans, and overall strengths of the candidate and suitability for the Leadership Chair.
    • A CV, including details of research and teaching scholarly output (for example, peer-reviewed publications, as well as any non-traditional research outputs  such as datasets, software, creative arts), grants, presentations, collaborations/partnerships, impact measures (such as influence on their field, and/or on policy and practice, and community engagement), honours/awards (research and teaching), leadership experience, and service.
    • A one-page (maximum) statement that describes the applicant’s experience with and plans for attracting and mentoring a diverse group of students, trainees and research personnel, and establishing an equitable and inclusive research environment.
    • A five-page (maximum) statement that includes:
      • An overview of the applicant’s research program to be developed at UVic.
      • Details of how the proposed research aligns with UVic’s existing or emerging areas of research strength, and potential for collaboration with researchers at UVic.
      • Plans to engage with the research environment in BC, Canada, and internationally.
      • Plans to support diversity and inclusiveness in research.
    • A one page statement of the candidate’s teaching philosophy and teaching/mentoring experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
    • Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide the names and contact information of three references.
