Assistant Teaching Professor

Teaching Stream Faculty Position

We invite applications from talented educators for a tenure-track position in Computer Science, at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor, to commence July 1, 2024. This is a limited search for female, gender diverse, or indigenous candidates (see below). A PhD in Computer Science or a related discipline is required. 

The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $102,045 - $126,056. UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves and pension plan.

Requirements

Candidates are expected to provide evidence of the following.

• Excellence in undergraduate teaching.
• A commitment to pedagogical inquiry and teaching innovation.
• Engagement in teaching-related scholarly activities.
• Leadership potential in advancing undergraduate education

Applicants must submit a cover letter, CV and a teaching dossier, which together must provide the evidence detailed above. The teaching dossier must include the following information.

• Teaching statement
• Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) statement
• Syllabi of courses taught
• Samples of course material
• Evidence of innovative teaching practices and teaching effectiveness
• Evidence of participation in instructional development (e.g., presentations, publications or participation in workshops/conferences related to teaching) will be considered an asset.

The EDI statement should briefly describe their experience with addressing EDI and/or how the candidate plans to contribute to the EDI goals of the Department (see https://www.uvic.ca/ecs/about/equity-action-planning/index.php ).

The Department of Computer Science, situated within the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, offers B.Sc. Major, Honours and minor degrees in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Software Engineering program, jointly offered with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. It offers several joint programs combining Computer Science with Geography, Health Information Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics, Music, Physics, Psychology, Statistics and Visual Arts. The department offers Masters and Doctoral programs and there are currently 125 graduate students. It offers a one-year course-based Master of Engineering in Applied Data Science, jointly with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. There are currently 34 faculty members, including three Canada Research Chairs, with 10 members having joined the Department in the past five years, creating a dynamic environment with opportunities for growth and development. In the latest Leiden ranking, UVic placed top five in Canada for its proportionate research impact in all sciences, and first in mathematics and computer science. Victoria is a great place to live and boasts a vibrant high-tech sector with over 900 companies on Vancouver Island.
