    The Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria acknowledges with respect the Songhees, Esquimalt and WSÁNEĆ peoples on whose traditional territory the university stands and whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

    The Departments of Indigenous Education and Curriulum and Instruction at the University of Victoria invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Teaching Professor position, to commence July 1, 2024.

    The candidate's qualifications, experience, overall market demand, discipline, and the unit appointed to will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $102,362 - $135,511. UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves, and pension plan.

    In accordance with the University’s Equity Plan and pursuant to section 42 of the BC Human Rights Code, the selection will be limited to Indigenous peoples. Our search committee will review the pool of applications from those who self-identify with this designated group. Candidates from this group must self-identify in their cover letter to be considered for this position.

    Preference is to be given to qualified Indigenous Scholars from the following, in order of priority:

  • a) lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ nations and communities;
  • b) Coast Salish, Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Kwakwaka’wakw nations and communities on Vancouver Island and beyond, including cross-border communities;
  • c) North American Indigenous nations and communities; and
  • d) Global Indigenous communities.

    Requirements

    We are seeking a colleague who can contribute to teaching, research, and service in Indigenous education and language revitalization as well as in curriculum and instruction.

    What we are looking for (success criteria):

    • A PhD or EdD in Indigenous Studies, Indigenous Education, Educational Studies, or a related field by the time of the appointment;
    • Knowledge and experience in the area of Indigenous Education. Preferred specializations include indigenizing teacher education and Indigenous language revitalization;
    • Ability to contribute to teaching and supervision in the area of Indigenous Language Revitalization, Reclamation, Maintenance and additional areas of Teacher Education (e.g., Arts Education, Mathematics Education, Language and Literacy);
    • Applied knowledge of Indigenous pedagogies and methodologies;
    • Contributions to decolonization and Indigenous community resurgence;
    • Commitment to collegiality and collaborative, community-engaged scholarship and teaching;
    • Successful university level teaching and mentorship.

    Additional criteria (not required but an asset):

    • Commitment to learning, speaking and teaching an Indigenous language;
    • Indigenous ancestry with lived experience in Indigenous communities, cultures and traditions;
    • Commitment to enacting inclusive practices within diverse populations;
    • Evidence of successful classroom teaching experience at the elementary, middle and/or high school level;
    • Interest/experience in working in cross-disciplinary teaching and/or research teams.

The Indigenous Education team is committed to working with Indigenous communities and campus partners to develop high quality and responsive educational programs and research. Curriculum and Instruction is a dynamic department committed to promoting the diverse interests and expertise of its faculty. Department members engage in a broad range of multidisciplinary and collaborative research and are dedicated to providing exemplary teaching for learners. In addition to undergraduate teacher education programs, the department offers a Minor in Education, Master of Education, Master of Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy programs. Faculty are also active in service to the university and larger community.
